Traditional Kerala houseboat on the Alleppey backwaters at sunset — best time to visit Kerala

Quick answer

The best time to visit Kerala is September to March, when the weather is warm, pleasant and largely dry — ideal for the backwaters, hill stations and beaches. November to February is the most comfortable window. The June–September monsoon is lush, quiet and the traditional Ayurveda season, while April–May is hot and humid on the coast but pleasant in the hills.

Kerala — God's Own Country — works almost year-round, but the experience changes completely with the season. A houseboat drifting through the Alleppey backwaters under clear winter skies is a very different trip from the same backwaters brimming and emerald-green in the monsoon. This guide breaks down exactly what each month feels like, so you can match your journey to the Kerala you want.

Kerala's seasons at a glance

Kerala has three broad seasons, shaped by the southwest monsoon that gives the state its famous greenery:

A short northeast monsoon can also bring brief showers in October–November, which is exactly what leaves the state so lush at the start of peak season.

Peak season: October to March

This is Kerala at its easiest. Rain is rare, humidity drops, and the backwaters, tea hills and beaches all show their best. November to February is the sweet spot — warm afternoons, pleasantly cool evenings and clear skies for houseboat cruises and Kovalam sunsets. It is also the busiest and priciest window, especially around Christmas and New Year, so premium houseboats and resorts should be booked well ahead. If you want peak-season weather with fewer people, aim for early October or late January into March.

Monsoon: June to September

Don't dismiss the monsoon — for many travellers it is the most magical time. The rain usually falls in heavy but predictable spells rather than all day, the whole state turns a vivid green, waterfalls come alive, crowds thin and rates soften. Crucially, the monsoon is the traditional Ayurveda season: the cool, humid air is considered ideal for the body to absorb treatments, and genuine Ayurvedic centres run their best programmes now. It suits slow, restful trips and wellness retreats more than packed sightseeing.

Summer: April to May

The coast becomes hot and sticky, but this is when Kerala's hill stations shine. Munnar's tea gardens and Wayanad's forests stay comfortably cool, making them a fine warm-weather escape, and low-season pricing means better value on hill resorts. Plan hill-focused itineraries and keep coastal time light.

What this means for packing

For peak season, light breathable cottons, a thin layer for cool hill evenings, sandals and sun protection are enough. Travelling in the monsoon? Add a light rain jacket, quick-dry clothing and mosquito repellent. We send every guest a tailored packing note with their itinerary — see our travel FAQ for more, or read the story behind how we plan.

Frequently asked questions

January and February are widely considered the best — warm, dry and comfortable across the backwaters, hills and beaches. November, December and March are equally excellent.
Yes, for the right traveller. The June–September monsoon brings lush greenery, fewer crowds, lower prices and the authentic Ayurveda treatment season. Rain usually comes in spells rather than all day, so it suits slow, restful and wellness-focused trips.
There is no truly bad time, but April–May can be hot and humid on the coast. If you travel then, focus on the cool hill stations of Munnar and Wayanad rather than the beaches.
December is one of the best months — warm days, cool evenings and clear skies, ideal for houseboats and beaches. It is also the festive peak, so book premium stays and houseboats well in advance.
November to February gives the driest, sunniest houseboat nights on the Alleppey and Kumarakom backwaters. The monsoon is atmospheric and green but wetter.
The monsoon months of June to September are the traditional and most recommended season for Ayurvedic treatments, when the cool, humid climate helps the body respond to therapy.
Munnar and Wayanad are pleasant almost year-round and are especially welcome in the April–May summer heat and beautifully green just after the monsoon (September–October).
Four to five days covers Munnar and the backwaters; six to eight lets you add Kochi, Thekkady and a beach. We tailor the length to your pace — see our Kerala tour packages.
Rain is rare in December and January — these are dry, peak-season months. The occasional light shower is possible in October and early November as the northeast monsoon passes.
Very much so. Onam (August–September) is Kerala's most vibrant festival, with flower carpets, grand feasts and the famous snake-boat races — a memorable, if monsoon-season, time to visit.
