Quick answer
The best time to visit Himachal Pradesh is March to June (a cool summer escape) and September to November (clear, crisp, post-monsoon). For snow, visit December to February. Avoid the July–August monsoon in the hills, when landslides can disrupt roads.
From Shimla's colonial charm to Manali's peaks and Spiti's high desert, Himachal offers a hill station for every mood. This guide times your Himachal journey.
Himachal's seasons
- Summer (Mar–Jun): the classic escape from the plains — pleasant days, open high roads late-season.
- Monsoon (Jul–Aug): lush but landslide-prone; plan carefully.
- Autumn (Sep–Nov): clear skies, golden valleys, fewer crowds.
- Winter (Dec–Feb): snow in Shimla, Manali and Kufri.
Month-by-month table
| Months | Weather | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Mar–Jun | Cool, pleasant | Summer escape, Shimla–Manali, Spiti (late) |
| Jul–Aug | Rainy, green | Lush scenery; watch for landslides |
| Sep–Nov | Crisp, clear | Autumn colour, trekking, photography |
| Dec–Feb | Cold, snowy | Snow in Shimla, Manali, Kufri |
Summer escape
March to June is peak season — Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and Dalhousie offer cool relief from the plains, and by June the high passes toward Spiti and Lahaul open up. Book ahead for May–June school holidays.
Winter & snow
December to February brings snow to Shimla, Kufri and Manali (Solang), perfect for snow play and cosy mountain stays. Higher routes close; we plan around accessible areas.
Monsoon caution
July–August is beautiful and green but the wettest, with a real risk of landslides and road closures in the hills. If travelling then, we keep itineraries flexible and stick to safer, well-connected areas.
