Quick answer
To reach Kedarnath, travel to Sonprayag/Gaurikund (from Haridwar/Dehradun via Rudraprayag), then complete the final ~16–18 km trek from Gaurikund on foot, by pony/palki, or take a helicopter from Phata, Guptkashi or Sersi. Kedarnath sits at about 3,580 m, so acclimatise and pace yourself.
Kedarnath is the most demanding of the four dhams to reach. Here are all the options.
Reaching the base (Gaurikund)
From Haridwar or Dehradun, drive via Rishikesh, Devprayag and Rudraprayag to Sonprayag; a local shuttle continues to Gaurikund, the trek trailhead. It's a long mountain drive, usually broken over a night or two.
The Kedarnath trek
The trail climbs roughly 16–18 km from Gaurikund to the temple, gaining significant altitude. Most reasonably fit pilgrims complete it in a day with breaks; many stay overnight near the shrine. Start early and carry water, snacks and warm layers.
Kedarnath by helicopter
Helicopter shuttles run from Phata, Guptkashi and Sersi to Kedarnath, cutting the trek to a short flight — popular with those short on time or unable to walk. Book early; flights depend on weather. See our helicopter guide.
Ponies, palki & porters
Ponies (ghoda), palki (palanquin) and porters are available at Gaurikund for those who prefer not to walk — a good option for elders (see Char Dham for seniors).
Tips
- Acclimatise and don't rush — Kedarnath is at high altitude.
- Start the trek early in the day.
- Carry ID, registration, water and warm, waterproof layers.
