Quick answer
The fastest way to reach Ladakh is to fly into Leh (IXL) — but you must then rest to acclimatise. The scenic alternatives are the Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh highways, open roughly June–September, which allow more gradual altitude gain.
How you reach Leh affects both your schedule and how your body copes with altitude. Here are the options.
By air to Leh (IXL)
Leh's Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport has daily flights from Delhi (and seasonal links elsewhere). Flying is quickest, but you arrive at ~3,500 m in an hour, so plan a full rest day or two on arrival — see our altitude guide.
Manali–Leh highway
A spectacular ~2-day drive over high passes (Rohtang/Atal, Baralacha La, Tanglang La), usually open June to September/October. The gradual ascent helps acclimatisation, with an overnight around Jispa or Sarchu.
Srinagar–Leh highway
The ~2-day route via Kargil and Lamayuru, generally open a little earlier (around late May to October). It's considered gentler for acclimatisation and passes striking monasteries.
Which route to choose
| Route | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fly to Leh | ~1 hr | Fastest; needs 2 rest days to acclimatise |
| Manali–Leh | ~2 days | Dramatic high passes; open Jun–Sep/Oct |
| Srinagar–Leh | ~2 days | Gentler ascent; monasteries en route |
A popular plan is to drive up one highway and fly out, easing acclimatisation while saving time.
