Gulmarg vs Manali for Snow (December 2026 – January 2027): Which One Should You Choose?

Deep snow and skiing, or an easier road trip with snow a day away? An honest comparison for December–January: snow reliability, getting there, what to do, the cold, heavy-snow closures, the New Year crush and what a private trip costs.

Choose Gulmarg if snow is the whole point of the trip — deep snow, the gondola and real skiing. Choose Manali if you want an easier, cheaper road trip from North India with snow a day trip away at Solang. Neither place promises snow in early December: in 2025 Gulmarg had no major snowfall until the last days of the month, and Manali town rarely sees snow before January. For both, the safest window is late December to February, and the second half of January and February is better than Christmas week. Gulmarg is colder, higher and needs a flight or the train to Srinagar; Manali is milder in town, reachable overnight by Volvo, and much busier at New Year.

This guide compares the two honestly for a December–January trip: how reliable the snow is, how to get there from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru or Chennai, what you can actually do, how cold it gets, what happens when it snows heavily, the Christmas–New Year crush, and what a private trip costs. We are a tour operator based in Shimla and plan both.

Gulmarg vs Manali this winter: key facts checked 3 October 2026
  • Best snow window for both: late December to February. The second half of January and February are the most reliable months.
  • December 2025 showed the risk: early in the month Gulmarg still had no major snowfall; snow arrived just before New Year and hotels filled up.
  • Where the snow is in Manali: not usually in the town in December. Solang (about 2,500 m) usually has settled snow by late December; Sissu, beyond the Atal Tunnel (about 3,100 m), has deep snow when the road is open.
  • Gulmarg gondola, 2026 rates: Phase 1 to Kongdori ₹800, Phase 2 ₹1,000, booked on the Jammu & Kashmir Cable Car Corporation website. Phase 2 stops in wind, snowfall or poor visibility.
  • Getting there: Gulmarg is a flight to Srinagar (or the direct Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat, about 4 h 50 min) and then about two hours by road. Manali is 12–14 hours by road from Delhi, or an overnight Volvo.
  • Cold: Gulmarg recorded −10.0 °C on the night of 31 December 2024. Manali town is milder; Solang and Sissu are colder.
  • Heavy-snow days close things: on 22–23 January 2026, snow cancelled at least 17 flights at Srinagar and shut the Jammu–Srinagar highway; on 24 January 2026, 1,291 roads were closed in Himachal and the Atal Tunnel stayed shut for about four days.
  • Book by: the end of October for Christmas–New Year hotels in either place.

Gulmarg or Manali: which is better for snow?

They are different trips. Gulmarg is a small, high ski meadow at about 2,650 m with a gondola that climbs higher still; you go there for the snow itself. Manali is a full hill town at about 2,000 m with the snow above it — Solang, and beyond the Atal Tunnel, Sissu — plus the Kullu valley, cafés, markets and a much wider choice of hotels.

Which has more reliable snow in December and January?

Gulmarg, once winter has properly set in — but neither is a sure thing in early December. In 2025, local reports in the first week of December said Gulmarg still had no major snowfall and visitors were disappointed; the snow came just before New Year, and hotels then filled to near capacity. In Himachal, the India Meteorological Department's own Shimla record shows snowfall that used to come in December now comes in January or early February.

PeriodGulmargManali (and Solang, Sissu)
1–20 DecemberEarly season: snow possible, not guaranteed. In 2025 it had not arrived by the first weekManali town usually dry. Snow on the heights; Sissu has snow if the tunnel road is open
21–31 DecemberGood chance of snow cover; the coldest stretch begins (Chillai Kalan, from 21 December)Solang usually has settled snow by now; town snow is a bonus
JanuaryDeep snow; the best skiing beginsThe most reliable month in Himachal — heaviest snowfall, and the most road closures
FebruaryDeep snow and longer days; the Khelo India Winter Games were held here on 23–26 February 2026Deep snow at altitude: Solang had over four feet on 5 February 2026

If your dates are flexible, go in the second half of January or in February, whichever you choose. If you are tied to Christmas or New Year, Gulmarg gives you better odds of snow underfoot at the resort itself; Manali gives you more chances to drive to where the snow is.

How do you reach Gulmarg and Manali?

FromGulmargManali
DelhiFlight to Srinagar, then about 2 hours by road. Or train to Jammu Tawi and the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat12–14 hours by road, best as two legs via Chandigarh or Shimla; or the overnight Volvo
Chandigarh and PunjabFlight to Srinagar, or by road and rail via JammuAbout 7–8 hours by road from Chandigarh
MumbaiFlights to Srinagar from MumbaiFly to Chandigarh or Delhi, then by road
Bengaluru, Chennai, HyderabadFly to Srinagar, usually with one changeFly to Chandigarh or Delhi, then by road

Since 2 May 2026 the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat has run without a change of train at Katra: two trains a day each way, about 4 hours 50 minutes, through the Pir Panjal. In winter it is the reliable alternative when snow or fog grounds flights at Srinagar. Kullu–Manali (Bhuntar) airport is small, so most people reach Manali by road. Our guides to how to reach Kashmir and Manali by luxury Volvo have the details.

What can you do in the snow at each?

Gulmarg is built around the snow. The gondola climbs in two phases: Phase 1 from the resort (about 2,650 m) to Kongdori (about 3,080 m), then Phase 2 higher up Apharwat. Book on the Jammu & Kashmir Cable Car Corporation's website; the 2026 rates were ₹800 for Phase 1 and ₹1,000 for Phase 2, and Phase 2 is suspended at short notice in wind, snowfall or poor visibility. Gulmarg is India's main ski resort: beginners take lessons on the gentle slopes near the village, and the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering runs 14-day ski courses here. Sledges and snow play are on the meadow itself.

Manali keeps the snow up the valley. Solang is the main snow area — sledging, tubing and beginner skiing, with courses from the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering. Beyond the Atal Tunnel, Sissu has deep snow in the Chandra valley when the road is open; treat it as an "if the road is open" day. The town gives you Old Manali, Hadimba temple, Vashisht's hot springs and Naggar castle on days when the snow roads are closed. Rohtang Pass is shut all winter.

Prices for sledges, tubes and other snow rides at both places are negotiated on the spot. Agree the price before you get on anything.

How cold is it, and is it suitable for children and parents?

Both are properly cold, and Gulmarg is colder. On the night of 31 December 2024, Gulmarg recorded −10.0 °C, Pahalgam −9.2 °C and Srinagar −0.9 °C. Late December to the end of January is Kashmir's coldest stretch, Chillai Kalan. Manali town is milder than Gulmarg, but nights are below freezing, and Solang and Sissu are colder than the town.

Pack layers rather than one heavy coat: a thermal base layer, a fleece or wool mid-layer, a waterproof jacket, waterproof boots with grip, gloves, a wool cap and sunglasses. Ask every hotel what its heating is, and whether it runs all night.

What happens when it snows heavily?

The same snow you are travelling for closes roads and grounds flights, in both places. Plan for it rather than hoping it won't happen:

Three rules that protect the trip: keep a spare day before your flight or train home; do every long drive in daylight with a local driver who knows the road; and check road and flight status the evening before, not the week before. In Kashmir, the Vande Bharat to Jammu is a useful plan B when Srinagar flights are cancelled.

Want a plan that works if the snow closes a road?

Send us your dates and where you are starting from — we will build a private Gulmarg or Manali trip with a spare day, heated hotels and a driver who knows the winter roads.

Christmas and New Year: how crowded does it get?

Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday and New Year's Day 2027 on a Friday, so there are two long weekends back to back — peak demand in both places.

If you can travel between 5 and 20 December, or after 4 January, both places are quieter and better value — and January brings the better snow anyway.

What does a private snow trip cost?

For Manali and Himachal, our indicative bands for a private trip of 4–5 nights (per person, two sharing) are below. Flights or trains to the start point are extra, and every quotation is built to your exact dates.

Style1–20 DecemberChristmas–New Year
Volvo + private car, comfortable hotels₹22,000–₹38,000₹32,000–₹55,000
Private car throughout, premium hotels₹38,000–₹65,000₹55,000–₹95,000
Luxury₹65,000 and above₹95,000 and above

A Gulmarg trip is usually priced as part of a Kashmir trip — Srinagar, Gulmarg and often Pahalgam — and we quote it to your dates. What moves the price most is the flight to Srinagar, and Gulmarg's small number of heated rooms over Christmas and New Year. For travellers from Delhi, Chandigarh and Punjab, Manali is usually the cheaper trip, because the whole journey can be made by road. See Kashmir tour cost and Himachal tour cost for what changes a quotation.

Can you do both, or is there a third option?

Not sensibly on one short trip: they are in different states, and in winter the road between them is not an option. Choose one and give it time. A good Kashmir winter trip is Srinagar 2 nights, Gulmarg 2 nights and Pahalgam 1 — see our Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam itinerary. A good Himachal one is Shimla 2 nights and Manali 3, with a Solang day and a Sissu day if the road is open — see the Shimla–Manali itinerary.

If you want snow with less driving near Shimla, Kufri is 30–45 minutes from the town and Narkanda, higher and quieter, has a small ski slope. Our Himachal winter snow guide covers every option, and for December specifically, see Himachal Pradesh in December 2026.

Kashmir tourism recovered strongly through 2026, and Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam are operating normally with visible security at the resorts. As with any trip, check current advisories a week before you travel.

About the facts in this guide

Snow follows the weather, not the calendar, so the patterns here describe the usual season, not a promise for your dates. The December 2025 and January 2026 examples are from news reports; the Himachal snow pattern is from the India Meteorological Department’s Shimla record. Gondola rates are the 2026 rates and can change for the new season. Prices are indicative, exclude flights and trains, and every quotation is built to your exact dates.
