About the park

Grassland, wetland and the Brahmaputra

Kaziranga lies on the floodplain of the Brahmaputra, a mosaic of tall elephant grass, shallow wetlands (beels) and patches of forest. The annual floods renew the grasslands that make it one of the best places in Asia to see large mammals in the open.

Beyond the rhino you can see wild water buffalo, eastern swamp deer, hog deer, Asian elephants, and in a lucky moment a tiger. In winter the wetlands fill with resident and migratory birds, which makes Kaziranga a favourite with birders and photographers.

Kaziranga National Park — FAQs

Kaziranga is famous for the greater one-horned rhinoceros — it holds about two-thirds of the world’s population — and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and tiger reserve.

Roughly November to April. The park closes in the monsoon, from about May to October, because of the Brahmaputra floods.

January to April, when the grass is cut back and animals are easier to see; November and December are greener with more migratory birds.

The Central (Kohora) and Western (Bagori) ranges are the most popular for rhinos; the Eastern range is best for birds. We usually combine two ranges.

Rhino sightings are very likely in Kaziranga, especially in the Central and Western ranges, though no wildlife sighting is ever guaranteed. Tigers are present but far harder to see.

Two to three nights, with three or four safaris across two ranges.

Fly to Jorhat (about 2 hours away) or Guwahati (about 5 hours away) and drive to Kohora. We arrange the transfers.

Yes. Safaris are by jeep with no walking, and lodges near Kohora are comfortable. We keep the drives from Guwahati in easy stages.

Yes. A popular plan combines Guwahati and the Kamakhya temple, Kaziranga and Shillong or Cherrapunji over about 7–8 days.

Choose Kaziranga for rhinos, buffalo and birds in open grassland; choose Ranthambore, Bandhavgarh or Corbett if seeing a tiger is your main goal.
