About this journey

This journey pairs Assam’s great wildlife park with the cloud-wrapped hills of Meghalaya. You begin with the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati, spend two nights on safari in Kaziranga, then climb to Shillong for waterfalls, the Cherrapunji gorges, the clean village of Mawlynnong and the clear Umngot river at Dawki.

Drives in the hills are winding, so we pace them with stops and keep the trek to the living root bridges optional.

November to April, when Kaziranga is open and the Meghalaya hills are clear. Meghalaya is very wet in the monsoon.

The best-known root bridges are reached by a long, steep stepped path. It is optional; we suggest closer viewpoints for elders and children.

About 6–7 hours on highway and hill roads. We plan stops and an early start.

No special permit is needed for Indian travellers on this route; rules for foreign nationals and some border areas can differ, so we confirm before travel.

Yes — the 4-day Kaziranga safari covers just the wildlife, or we can drop Dawki for a 6-day plan.
