For a snow honeymoon in Himachal, travel between mid-January and mid-February and plan seven or eight nights: two in Shimla, four in Manali for the snow of the Solang valley, and a spare day before your flight home. Book a room that is heated all night and that a car can still reach after a snowfall, and travel by private car rather than overnight coach. From Colombo, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore you fly into Delhi. From Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah you can fly straight to Chandigarh, about three and a half hours by road from Shimla.
Our guide to seeing snow in India covers the basics for travellers from warm countries: how cold it gets, what to pack and how the mountain roads behave. This guide is about the decisions a couple makes. It covers which weeks to choose around your wedding and your own holidays, where to stay and which room to book, halal food and prayer, and how many nights to plan. We are a tour operator based in Shimla, and we plan honeymoons in these hills every winter.
- Best weeks for snow: mid-January to mid-February. In December, snow usually lies at Solang and beyond the Atal Tunnel, but snow in Shimla or Manali town is not promised.
- Where to stay: Manali for the most snow (the Solang valley, and Sissu when the tunnel road is open). Shimla for the Mall, the heritage railway and the snow at Kufri and Narkanda.
- Trip length: seven or eight nights, with four in Manali and a spare day before the flight home.
- Flights: non-stop to Delhi from Colombo, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Non-stop to Chandigarh from Dubai (IndiGo, daily), Abu Dhabi (IndiGo) and Sharjah (Air India Express).
- Visa: Sri Lankan, Malaysian, Singaporean, Emirati, Qatari, Omani, Kuwaiti and Bahraini passport holders can use India’s e-Visa. Saudi Arabia is not on the e-Visa list. The free e-Visa for Malaysians runs until 31 December 2026.
- Dates to plan around: 24 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 is the busiest, most expensive fortnight. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February. Chinese New Year falls on 6–7 February 2027.
- The room matters more than the view: it should be heated all night, have hot water at any hour and be reachable by car after fresh snow.
When is the best time for a snow honeymoon in Himachal?
If snow is the point of the trip, go between mid-January and mid-February. January brings the heaviest snowfall. By February the snow at Solang is deep and the days are longer and sunnier, which suits a honeymoon well. December is cold, clear and festive, but in recent winters the first snow in the towns has usually come in January, not before Christmas.
| Window | Snow | For a honeymoon |
|---|---|---|
| 1–20 December | Usually settled at Solang by late December, and deep beyond the tunnel. The towns are often dry | Quiet and good value. Plan around Solang and Sissu, and treat snow in town as a bonus |
| 24 December–3 January | As above; a fresh fall in town is possible | The busiest, most expensive fortnight. Many hotels set minimum stays and add a compulsory gala dinner. Book early or avoid it |
| 4–31 January | The best odds of snowfall, including in Shimla and Manali towns | The coldest weeks, and the month roads close most often, so keep a spare day. Republic Day (Tuesday 26 January 2027) gives many Indian travellers a long weekend, so the snow points are busier around it |
| 1–15 February | Deep snow at altitude; longer, sunnier days | Often the best balance for a honeymoon. Muslim couples should finish before Ramadan, expected to begin around 8 February 2027 |
| Late February–March | Melting in the towns; snow higher up | Clear views and quieter roads, but less snow to play in |
Snow timing is based on the India Meteorological Department’s Shimla record and the last two winters; see our Himachal winter snow guide for the month-by-month detail.
Fitting the honeymoon around your own calendar
- Muslim couples from Malaysia, Singapore and the Gulf. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February, with Eid al-Fitr on 9 or 10 March. These are astronomical forecasts, and the dates depend on the moon sighting. A honeymoon in the second half of January or the first week of February fits before Ramadan, and it is also the best window for snow. After Eid, in the second half of March, the snow has mostly retreated to higher ground.
- Chinese New Year couples from Malaysia and Singapore. Chinese New Year falls on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February 2027, and Monday 8 February is also a public holiday in Singapore. It is not an Indian holiday, so Himachal is no busier because of it, and early February is a good snow week. Book your flights to Delhi early, because many families travel over the holiday.
- Couples from Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka shares India’s time zone, and Colombo to Delhi is under four hours. Even a short honeymoon works: five nights in Manali is enough if snow is the main aim.
- Couples from the Gulf. Fly into Chandigarh and you skip Delhi altogether, which saves most of a day at each end.
Manali or Shimla: where should you stay?
For snow, Manali. For a mix of snow, colonial history and a gentler first day, two nights in Shimla followed by four in Manali. Most couples who fly in from abroad want both, and the drive between them is a full day, so the order matters: Shimla first, then Manali, then back down.
| Base | Snow | For couples | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manali | The Solang valley just above the town; Sissu beyond the Atal Tunnel when the road is open | Riverside and orchard cottages, the cafés of Old Manali, the hot springs at Vashisht, and the Hadimba temple in its cedar forest | Choose a hotel your car can reach after fresh snow. Places on steep upper roads can be cut off for a day or two |
| Shimla | Kufri and Fagu (30–45 minutes) and Narkanda further on. Snow in town comes most often in January | The Mall and the Ridge, heritage hotels, the Kalka–Shimla railway, and the open-air ice rink, which normally runs from December to February | The easiest first stop from Chandigarh, about 3½ hours by road. It gets less snow than Manali |
| Narkanda | Usually on the ridge by late December; there is a small ski slope | Very quiet, with wide views of the snow peaks | Few hotels. Best as one night or a day trip from Shimla |
| Sissu (Lahaul) | Deep and dependable | The most snow you will see on the trip | A day trip from Manali, only when the tunnel road is open. In 2026 the village council stopped tourist activities from 20 January to 28 February |
Our Shimla vs Manali comparison sets out the two towns side by side for the rest of the year. Our Shimla–Manali honeymoon itinerary shows the classic six-day version of the route.
Which room should you book?
Ask about the heating before you look at the view. Many hill hotels were built for summer visitors, and a beautiful room that is cold at 3 a.m. spoils a honeymoon faster than anything else. When we choose rooms for a winter honeymoon, we check six things:
- Heating that runs all night, and hot water at any hour, not only in the morning.
- Access after snow. A hotel near the main road or in town is worth more in winter than an extra star on a hilltop. After a heavy fall, cars can be stopped below steep hotel roads.
- A room facing the snow peaks. In Manali especially, a view of the snow from your bed is worth paying for.
- A fireplace, if you want one. Some heritage and boutique hotels have fireplace rooms. Ask whether the room also has heating, because a fire alone will not keep it warm until morning.
- The honeymoon touches. A decorated room, a cake or a candlelit dinner can be arranged with the hotel on request. Tell us when you enquire, not on arrival.
- As few hotel changes as possible. Two hotels in a week is relaxing; four means packing every other morning.
Planning a honeymoon from Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore or the Gulf?
Tell us your wedding date, the dates you can travel and your passport country — we will suggest the weeks with the best snow odds and rooms that are warm all night, with a private car from the airport and back.
How do you get there, and which visa do you need?
From South and Southeast Asia, fly into Delhi. From the UAE, you have a choice: Delhi, or a non-stop flight to Chandigarh, which is much closer to the hills. Your visa depends on your passport, not on the country where you live, so a couple living in Dubai on Indian, Pakistani or British passports follows the rules for those passports.
| From | Fly to | Then | Visa (checked 8 October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sri Lanka | Delhi, non-stop from Colombo, about 3 h 45 min | A short flight to Chandigarh and the drive up, or a night in Delhi first | India’s e-Visa (e-Tourist) |
| Malaysia | Delhi, non-stop from Kuala Lumpur, about 5½ hours | As above | A free 30-day e-Tourist visa until 31 December 2026; after that, the standard e-Visa unless the scheme is extended |
| Singapore | Delhi, non-stop, about 6 hours | As above | India’s e-Visa (e-Tourist) |
| United Arab Emirates | Chandigarh, non-stop from Dubai (IndiGo, daily), Abu Dhabi (IndiGo) or Sharjah (Air India Express); or Delhi | Chandigarh to Shimla is about 3½ hours by road; Chandigarh to Manali is 7–8 hours | The e-Visa. A visa on arrival is possible only if you have held an Indian e-Visa or regular visa before |
| Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain | Delhi, or Chandigarh via a connection in the UAE | As for Sri Lanka | India’s e-Visa (e-Tourist) |
| Saudi Arabia | Delhi, or Chandigarh via the UAE | As for Sri Lanka | Not on the e-Visa list. Apply for a regular tourist visa through the Indian mission in Saudi Arabia |
Flight details are from published schedules checked on 5–8 October 2026; schedules change every season, so check your dates before you book. Apply for the e-Visa only on the Government of India’s own portal, indianvisaonline.gov.in, between 120 and 4 days before arrival. Our India tourist visa guide explains the process.
The small airports in the hills have domestic flights only, and in winter they depend on the weather, so we do not build a honeymoon with fixed international flights around them. If you land in Delhi late in the evening, spend the first night there and travel up in daylight. And never plan the drive down from the mountains for the day of your flight home: one night of snow can close a road.
Private car or Volvo coach?
For a honeymoon from abroad, a private car with a driver who lives in the hills, from the airport and back. After an international flight, an overnight coach of twelve hours or more to Manali is a hard start to a honeymoon. A car lets you stop where you like for photographs. Your driver will know which roads are closing before you do, and after fresh snow tourist vehicles are often stopped beyond Solang Nala, with only 4×4 vehicles allowed through when the road reopens.
We also plan Volvo packages: an overnight coach from Delhi to Manali and back, with a private car for all the sightseeing in the valley. They suit travellers who are already in Delhi and want to keep the cost down, rather than couples arriving from abroad. Our guide to a private car and driver in India explains how the car, the driver and the hotels fit together.
What is there to do together in the snow?
- The Solang valley: sledging, snow tubing, a beginner’s ski lesson, and the ropeway when it is running. Go early on a weekday, as weekends and holidays are busy. Snow suits and boots can be hired for the day; bring your own gloves and socks.
- Sissu, if the tunnel road is open: the deep snow of the Chandra valley beyond the Atal Tunnel. Ask before you travel whether tourist activities are allowed in 2027.
- Kufri or Narkanda from Shimla: the nearest snow to Shimla. Narkanda is quieter and higher, with a small ski slope.
- Shimla’s open-air ice rink below the Ridge, when it is cold enough to freeze; it normally runs from December to February.
- The Kalka–Shimla railway, part of the UNESCO-listed Mountain Railways of India. On a honeymoon, a short stretch is enough.
- A slow afternoon in Manali: the hot springs at Vashisht, the cafés of Old Manali, and the Hadimba temple, which is at its most beautiful after fresh snow.
One place not to plan for: the Rohtang Pass is closed in winter. The snow you see on a winter honeymoon is at Solang, at Sissu and around Shimla.
Halal food, prayer and Ramadan: what Muslim couples ask
- Halal food. Do not expect the halal certification you find in Malaysia or the Gulf in hill hotels. Tell us when you enquire: we ask each hotel before we book whether its kitchen can serve halal meat. Where it cannot, the hill kitchens cook very good vegetarian food.
- Prayer. Shimla has mosques, and your driver can take you to the nearest one for Friday prayers. Prayer apps work normally; ask us before you travel about Manali.
- Ramadan. Plan the honeymoon to end before Ramadan begins (expected around 8 February 2027), or wait until after Eid, accepting that there will be less snow.
- Clothing. Warm, modest layers are what the cold requires anyway. The snow suits hired at Solang are worn over your own clothes.
How many nights does a snow honeymoon need?
Seven or eight nights is the right length for most couples flying in from abroad. Manali alone works in five or six, and adding the Taj Mahal takes it to ten.
| Nights | Route | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 5–6 | Four nights in Manali (Solang, Sissu if the road is open, Old Manali), with a night in Chandigarh or Delhi at either end as your flights require | Couples for whom snow comes first, and short trips from Sri Lanka |
| 7–8 | Two nights in Shimla and four in Manali, with Chandigarh or Delhi at the ends | The classic honeymoon, and our recommendation |
| 10 | As above, plus two nights for Delhi and Agra and the Taj Mahal | A first trip to India |
An eight-night route from Delhi looks like this:
- Day 1 — Delhi: arrive and rest.
- Day 2 — Shimla: a short flight to Chandigarh and about 3½ hours by private car up to Shimla. Evening on the Mall.
- Day 3 — Kufri or Narkanda: the nearest snow, then the ice rink below the Ridge if it is open.
- Day 4 — Shimla to Manali: 7–8 hours through Mandi and the Kullu valley. Leave early and arrive before dark.
- Day 5 — Solang: your main snow day.
- Day 6 — Sissu, if the road is open: otherwise a second Solang day, or Naggar.
- Day 7 — Manali, slowly: Old Manali, Vashisht and the Hadimba temple. This is also the spare day if a road closed.
- Day 8 — Manali to Chandigarh: a 7–8 hour drive and a night in Chandigarh.
- Day 9 — Home: a short flight to Delhi for your international flight, or, from the Gulf, straight home from Chandigarh.
Couples flying from the UAE to Chandigarh can drop the Delhi night and start on Day 2. To add the Taj Mahal, put two nights in Delhi and Agra at the start or the end. Agra is about four hours from Delhi on the Yamuna Expressway, and the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays.

What decides the price of a snow honeymoon?
We do not publish fixed prices, because a private honeymoon is built around your dates, your rooms and your flights. These are the things that move the quotation most:
- Your dates. Christmas to New Year is the most expensive fortnight of the winter. The weeks from mid-January onwards are usually better value, and they have the best snow.
- The room. A heated room with a view or a fireplace in a boutique or luxury hotel costs more than a standard room, and it is usually where honeymoon couples want to spend.
- Nights and hotel changes. How many nights you stay, and how many times you move.
- The car. A comfortable SUV is the right vehicle for snow roads.
- Flights within India. Flying Delhi–Chandigarh saves a long drive. From the UAE, landing in Chandigarh saves a night in Delhi.
- Extras. Ski lessons, the ropeway, candlelit dinners and the honeymoon room set-up.
Guests from outside India can be quoted in US dollars and pay by international bank transfer. International flights and visa fees are extra. Our Himachal tour cost page explains the other variables.
Mistakes honeymoon couples make
- Booking Christmas week late. The rooms with reliable heating and good access go first.
- Choosing a hotel from its snow photograph. Ask how it is reached after a snowfall and whether the room is heated all night.
- Treating Sissu as a fixed day. It depends on the tunnel road, so plan it as a bonus with an alternative ready.
- Driving down on the day of the flight home. Keep a full spare day between the mountains and your international flight.
- Too many hotels. Four hotels in seven nights means more packing than honeymoon.
- Planning for the Rohtang Pass. It is closed in winter.
- Landing late and driving up at night. Spend the first night in Delhi or Chandigarh.
