Quick answer

The easiest way to reach Kerala is to fly into Kochi (Cochin, COK), the main international and domestic airport. Trivandrum (TRV) suits southern Kerala and the beaches, and Calicut (CCJ) suits the north and Wayanad. Kerala is also well connected by train and by road from neighbouring states.

Kerala is one of India's easiest states to reach, with three airports, an excellent rail network and good highways. Here's how to get there whichever way you travel — and how we handle every transfer on a private Kerala tour.

By air

Kerala has three major airports:

AirportCodeBest for
Cochin International, KochiCOKMain gateway; central Kerala, backwaters, hills — most flights
Trivandrum InternationalTRVSouthern Kerala, Kovalam & Varkala beaches
Calicut (Kozhikode)CCJNorthern Kerala, Wayanad, Malabar

Kochi has the widest international links (the Gulf, Singapore and more) and frequent domestic flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai. Most of our journeys begin and end at Kochi.

By train

Kerala is well served by Indian Railways along its length, with major stations at Ernakulam (Kochi), Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Thrissur and Kollam. Trains connect Kerala with Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi, and the coastal rail route is scenic. Book premium classes (AC) well in advance in peak season.

By road

Kerala is connected by national highways to Tamil Nadu (via Coimbatore/Ooty), Karnataka (via Mysuru/Bengaluru toward Wayanad) and Goa. Overland arrivals are popular for combined South India itineraries — for example, ending a Tamil Nadu trip in the Kerala hills.

Getting around Kerala

Once in Kerala, a private chauffeur-driven car is by far the most comfortable and flexible way to travel — distances between highlights are short and scenic. We include all airport and inter-place transfers, and can add internal flights where they save time. The backwaters are explored by private houseboat.
