Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November. For anyone planning a Himachal trip around it, that single detail changes the answer — because a Diwali that lands on a Sunday does not give you a Diwali long weekend. The weekend is the festival. Most families are at home for it.
So the leisure travel splits into two windows either side, and they are not equally good. Here is what each one gives you, what it costs, and which one suits your trip.

In a year when Diwali falls midweek, you get a classic getaway pattern: people take two days off, bolt them to a weekend, and go to the hills. 2026 does not work like that. Dhanteras is Friday, Diwali is Sunday, and the festival then runs into the following Wednesday. The days people travel on are the days they are travelling home, not away.
The Delhi–Chandigarh–Shimla road is heavy on 5 and 6 November with people heading to family, and heavy again on 11 and 12 November with everyone returning. The hills themselves are at their quietest on 7 and 8 November. If you only look at the calendar and assume "Diwali weekend = crowded hill station", you will get it backwards.

Before Diwali: 27 October to 5 November
This is the window most people should take, and almost nobody writes about.
It opens the moment Kullu Dussehra finishes on about 26 October, and it runs until the Diwali rush begins. For roughly ten days the Kullu valley and the Shimla belt are in the best condition they reach all year and nothing in particular is on: the monsoon is long gone, the apple harvest is finished, the air is washed clean, the high peaks already carry snow, and the roads are still fully open.
Days are mild enough for a shirt in the sun. Nights need a proper jacket. Nothing is closed, nothing is booked out, and you are travelling between two demand spikes rather than inside one.
The catch is that it falls awkwardly for most working families — it is a plain working fortnight with no holiday attached. If you can take the leave, it is the best value-for-experience week in the Himachal calendar.

During the five days: 6 to 11 November
Travelling to Himachal during Diwali itself is unusual, and it has a specific character that is worth understanding before you decide.
What is good. The hill stations are genuinely quiet on Diwali day and the day before, because the domestic tourist has gone home. Shimla's Mall Road and Manali's Old Manali on Diwali night are lit, local, and not remotely touristy. Himachali families celebrate at home, so what you see is a real festival rather than a staged one.
What is not. Small hotels and family-run restaurants run on skeleton staff over 7 and 8 November, and some close entirely for a day. Drivers want to be home. Local sightseeing is fine, but do not plan a demanding, long-driving itinerary across the festival days. Larger hotels operate normally and often run a Diwali dinner, which is the safer choice if you are travelling in this window.
The roads are the real constraint. Delhi and Chandigarh empty out towards the hills and towards the plains simultaneously on 5–6 November, and the whole thing reverses on 11–12 November. A Delhi–Manali drive that normally takes 11 to 13 hours can take considerably longer on those four days. If your dates touch them, take an overnight Volvo and sleep through it, or move your travel day by 24 hours.
Most north Indian schools take a Diwali break around these dates, which is exactly why this window looks tempting to families. It works — but book a larger hotel rather than a boutique property, and keep the driving to the days outside 5–6 and 11–12 November.
After Diwali: 12 November onwards
From about 12 November the Kullu and Shimla valleys empty out, and they stay empty until the Christmas build-up begins in the third week of December. That five-week trough is the cheapest stretch of the Himachal year outside the monsoon.
Three things make it more attractive than the price alone suggests.
- It is the clearest air of the year in the hills — and the worst of the year in the plains. Delhi–NCR air quality deteriorates sharply through November; the Centre for Science and Environment tracks this as a consistent early-winter pattern. Himachal is the nearest place to get out of it: seven to ten hours from Delhi by road, with no flight involved. For a lot of our Delhi travellers this is the actual reason for the trip.
- First snow starts appearing. Not in Shimla or Manali town — that is a late-December to February event — but on the high ground and around the passes. You get snow in the view without snow on your road.
- Hotels you cannot get in season open up. The properties that are booked solid through October have availability, and rates fall well below their autumn level.
The trade-off is straightforward: it is properly cold, especially after dark, and daylight is short. Check that your hotel has working room heating that runs through the night — this is the single most common November complaint and the easiest one to avoid by asking the question before you book.
What the weather actually does
India Meteorological Department normals for the Shimla observatory put November at a mean daily maximum of 15.4 °C, a mean daily minimum of 7.0 °C, and normal monthly rainfall of 22.5 mm (period 1971–2000). October, for comparison, runs about 18.9 °C by day and 10.5 °C at night.
So November is roughly three degrees cooler than October at both ends of the day, and drier. That is a jacket-and-layers month, not a heavy-winter-clothing month, at least in the first three weeks and at Shimla's altitude. Manali's nights run colder than Shimla's despite the lower elevation, because of the valley floor. Anywhere above 2,500 metres is a different proposition again.

Roads and what closes
The main Himachal circuits — Shimla, Kufri, Narkanda, Kullu, Manali, Solang, Dharamshala, Dalhousie — are open and normal throughout November.
Above them, things change:
- Rohtang Pass closes to traffic whenever it snows, and shuts for the season once winter sets in. This no longer matters much for getting anywhere, because of the tunnel.
- The Atal Tunnel (9.02 km) replaced a 116 km Rohtang route that took five to six hours with a 71 km run of roughly two hours, and keeps Lahaul and Sissu reachable through the winter. Individual closures still happen after heavy snow.

The decision here is really just one question: can you take leave in a plain working week, or are you tied to the festival dates? If you can travel between 27 October and 5 November, take it. If you are tied to the holiday, travel during the five days and choose a larger hotel. If you are flexible and value matters more than timing, wait until after 12 November and take the best rates of the pre-Christmas year.
