Kullu Dussehra 2026: Dates, What Actually Happens, and How to Plan the Trip

International Kullu Dussehra 2026 runs from Wednesday 21 October to Tuesday 27 October, the dates the Dussehra Committee announced at its curtain-raiser in September. India’s Dussehra holiday is the day before, Tuesday 20 October. In Kullu the festival opens with the rath yatra of Lord Raghunath and continues for seven days at the Dhalpur maidan in Kullu town. Many travel pages still give 20–26 October, and that one day decides whether your trip works.

If you are planning Himachal around the October holidays, this is the week that changes hotel prices, road times and availability across the Kullu valley. Here is what happens, when to arrive, where to stay, and who this trip actually suits.

The date confusion, cleared up first

Across most of India, Dussehra is a single day. In 2026 that day is Tuesday 20 October. Effigies burn in the evening, the holiday ends, and people go home.

Kullu does the opposite: its Dussehra is a seven-day festival that opens with the rath yatra. In 2026 the Dussehra Committee has set it for Wednesday 21 to Tuesday 27 October, starting the day after the national holiday (the Dashami tithi continues until the afternoon of the 21st). So while Delhi and Chandigarh are going back to work on the 21st, Kullu is on day one.

What is planned for 2026. The Dussehra Committee’s plans include a drone show of about 500 drones on the second, fourth and sixth days (22, 24 and 26 October), a laser show, and the International Folk Dance Festival, with troupes invited through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations alongside groups from Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Punjab and other states. Thirty electric buses will run for the fair, with special buses to Manikaran, Ani-Nirmand, Lag and the Ujhi valley. The district administration publishes the detailed daily programme — cultural evenings, the closing rituals, road and parking arrangements — closer to the date. Confirm it before you finalise anything non-refundable.

What actually happens at Kullu Dussehra

This is not a Ram Lila with a burning effigy. It is a gathering of gods.

On the opening day, the deity of Lord Raghunath — installed in the valley in the 17th century by Raja Jagat Singh, and regarded as the valley's ruling god — is brought out and drawn through Kullu in a hand-pulled wooden chariot. The rath yatra has run in this form since 1606.

What makes it unlike anything else in India is the guest list. More than 300 village deities from across Kullu district are carried down from their own temples, on palanquins, by their own villagers, to pay obeisance to Raghunath ji at the Dhalpur maidan. Each arrives with its own musicians, its own retinue and its own protocol. For a week the maidan holds what is effectively an assembly of the valley's gods, surrounded by a fair, a craft market, nati dancing and cultural performances that in recent years have included international troupes.

The honest version for a traveller: the first day's rath yatra and the final day's closing ritual are the two set-pieces. The days in between are a fair — enjoyable, crowded, photogenic, and not something you need all seven days for.

How many days you actually need

Do not build a day trip from Manali to Kullu on the opening morning and expect it to work. The 40 km takes well over an hour on a normal day; on rath yatra day the approach road and parking around Dhalpur are managed, restricted and slow. Either stay close and walk in, or start very early with a driver who knows where he is allowed to stop.

Where to stay, and the trade-off nobody explains

Kullu town is small. It has hotels, but not many in the category most of our travellers expect, and the good ones sell out for festival week months ahead. That leaves three realistic choices.

Our usual recommendation for a family or a couple travelling in this week is Naggar or Katrain for the festival nights, then move up to Manali for the sightseeing days. It costs one hotel change and saves two long drives.

Getting there

Bhuntar is the nearest airport but it is a small field with a short schedule and a habit of cancelling in poor visibility. If you fly in, keep a road contingency. What the week costs

Festival week is not shoulder-season pricing. Expect hotel rates in the Kullu–Manali corridor to sit well above a normal October night, with minimum-stay conditions at the better properties.

What actually moves the number on a private trip:

• How close to Dhalpur you sleep. Kullu town on festival nights carries the biggest premium.
• Hotel category. The gap between a comfortable 3-star and a good 4-star widens sharply in this week.
• How many nights fall inside 21–27 October. Shifting even one night outside the window changes the total noticeably.
• Vehicle. A private car with a driver for the whole trip, versus Volvo for the intercity legs and a car only for local sightseeing.
• Party size. The car and driver cost the same for two people as for four.

Who this trip suits — and who should skip it

Worth it for: travellers who want a real cultural event rather than a viewpoint circuit; photographers — the devta processions are extraordinary; families with children old enough to manage crowds; anyone who has already done Shimla and Manali and wants a different reason to return.

Think twice if: you want a quiet mountain break — this is the least quiet week of the Kullu autumn; you are travelling with very young children or elderly parents who cannot manage long standing and dense crowds at the maidan; you dislike uncertainty, because programme timings shift and are published late.

If a peaceful Himachal autumn is what you actually want, travel the first half of October instead, before the 20th. You get the same clear skies and none of the crush. Best time to visit Himachal sets the month against the rest of the year.

Practical notes for the festival days

• Mornings are cold, afternoons are not. Kullu sits at roughly 1,200 m. October nights are properly cold; the maidan in the afternoon sun is warm. Layers, not one heavy coat.
• Stand where the procession forms, not where it ends. The crowd concentrates at the maidan. The route into it is where you get the photographs.
• Cash. The fair and the craft stalls are cash-first.
• Shoes. You will be on your feet on uneven ground for hours.
• Respect the deities. The palanquins are not exhibits. Do not touch them, do not block their path, and ask before photographing a devta closely.
• Confirm the daily programme with the district administration or your planner in the week before you travel.

Combining it with the rest of Himachal

Festival week is a strong anchor for a longer trip, because the valley is already at its autumn best — clear air, apple harvest finished, snow on the high peaks but not on the roads.
