November is one of the best months for a quiet, clear-sky Himachal trip, and one of the best-value months of the autumn. It is not the month for snow underfoot in Shimla or Manali. Avoid the Diwali travel days on the roads (5–6 and 11–12 November) and the Guru Nanak Jayanti weekend (21–24 November). The calmest weeks are 1–4 November and 13–20 November, plus the last week of the month from Monday to Thursday. Plan five to six nights for two bases, carry proper winter layers, and book rooms that are heated all night.
This guide covers what November 2026 is actually like: the dates to avoid, the weather in each town, where you can and cannot see snow, which roads close during the month, where to go, and what moves the price. We are a tour operator based in Shimla, and November is the month we recommend most often to people who want the hills without the crowds.
- Weather (IMD normals, day / night): Shimla 15.4 / 7.0 °C · Manali 18.4 / 1.5 °C · Dharamshala 21.1 / 10.4 °C · Kalpa 13.8 / 1.5 °C. Shimla averages only 1.5 rainy days in November.
- Snow in Shimla or Manali town: not expected; that is a late-December to February event. You will usually see fresh snow on the high peaks and passes, especially in the second half of the month.
- Busy days: 5–6 and 11–12 November on the Delhi–Chandigarh–Shimla road (Diwali is Sunday 8 November), and the Guru Nanak Jayanti long weekend, Saturday 21 to Tuesday 24 November.
- Quiet, best-value weeks: 1–4 November, 13–20 November and 25–30 November, especially Monday to Thursday.
- Roads that close: the Manali–Kaza road over Kunzum Pass shuts for the winter during November (it was officially closed on 23 November in 2024). Rohtang closes to traffic roughly from late November. Spiti stays reachable from Shimla through Kinnaur.
- Event: the International Lavi Fair at Rampur Bushahr, 11–14 November, on the road from Shimla to Kinnaur.
- Trip length: five to six nights for Shimla and Manali, or Dharamshala and Dalhousie; seven or more for Kinnaur.
Is November a good time to visit Himachal Pradesh?
Yes, if you want clear views, quiet roads and good value. No, if snow underfoot is the reason for the trip. After Diwali the hills empty out: the Kullu and Shimla valleys stay quiet from about 12 November until the Christmas build-up begins in the third week of December, and hotels are more flexible than at any time since the summer.
Three things work in your favour. The weather is dry and settled: Shimla averages 22.5 mm of rain in November, spread over about one and a half days, so a ruined day is rare. The views are at their sharpest, with fresh snow on the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges standing out against clear skies. And the roads are in good shape, because the monsoon repairs are done and winter has not yet closed anything on the main circuits.
Three things work against you. The nights are cold: in Manali and Kalpa the average minimum is about 1.5 °C, close to freezing. Days are short, so long drives need an early start. And the high passes start to close as the month goes on. November suits couples, families with older children, senior travellers who dislike crowds, and anyone escaping the plains. It does not suit a first snow trip with children; for that, wait for the second half of January.
Which dates in November 2026 are busiest, and which are best?
Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November, so the rush in November 2026 is on the roads either side of it, not in the hills themselves. The second busy patch is the Guru Nanak Jayanti weekend late in the month.
| Dates | What’s on | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Sun 1 – Wed 4 Nov | Ordinary days | Quiet, clear and settled. A very good window, especially for senior travellers. |
| Thu 5 – Fri 6 Nov | Diwali travel begins (Dhanteras on Friday 6) | The Delhi–Chandigarh–Shimla road is heavy. Do not plan your drive up on these days. |
| Sat 7 – Tue 10 Nov | Diwali (Sunday 8), Govardhan Puja (Tuesday 10) | The hills are at their quietest, but some small hotels and restaurants work with reduced staff. Choose a larger hotel. |
| Wed 11 – Thu 12 Nov | Bhai Dooj (Wednesday 11) and the return journey | The roads are heavy again, in the other direction. |
| Fri 13 – Fri 20 Nov | Ordinary weeks | The emptiest hills of the autumn and the most flexible hotel rates before Christmas. Our pick. |
| Sat 21 – Tue 24 Nov | Guru Nanak Jayanti (Tuesday 24): a four-day weekend with one day’s leave on Monday 23 | Shimla, Kasauli and Manali fill from Punjab, Chandigarh and Delhi. Book early, or travel on other dates. |
| Wed 25 – Mon 30 Nov | Late November | Cold nights and the best chance of fresh snow on the peaks. Pack full winter layers. |

What is the weather like in Himachal in November?
November is roughly three degrees cooler than October at both ends of the day, and drier. Days are mild and sunny; nights are cold everywhere and close to freezing in the higher valleys.
| Place | Day (average maximum) | Night (average minimum) | Rain | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shimla | 15.4 °C | 7.0 °C | 22.5 mm, about 1.5 days | Crisp, sunny days for walking; a jacket from late afternoon |
| Manali | 18.4 °C | 1.5 °C | 43.0 mm, about 2.8 days | Warm in the sun, close to freezing at night |
| Dharamshala | 21.1 °C | 10.4 °C | 23.7 mm, about 1.2 days | The mildest of the hill bases; McLeod Ganj above it is colder |
| Kalpa (Kinnaur) | 13.8 °C | 1.5 °C | 13.8 mm, about 1.5 days | Bright and dry, but the coldest nights of the four |

The averages hide the swings. In early November 2025, day temperatures across the state ran two to three degrees above normal, then dropped by four to five degrees in three days when a western disturbance brought light snow to the higher reaches. The records show how cold it can get: Manali has dropped to −5.0 °C in November (29 November 2000) and Kalpa to −6.2 °C (30 November 1986).
Ask about the heating before anything else. A room that is not heated through the night is the single most common November complaint in the hills, and the easiest one to avoid by asking the question before you book.
Does it snow in Himachal in November?
Not in Shimla or Manali town. Snow in the towns is a late-December to February event, and the Solang valley usually has settled snow only from late December. In November you see snow in the view, not underfoot: fresh snow on the high peaks and around the passes, more often in the second half of the month after a western disturbance.
If you want to touch snow in November, these are the realistic options:
- Sissu and the Lahaul side of the Atal Tunnel, a day trip from Manali. The tunnel stays open through the winter except for short closures after heavy snow; any snow at Sissu in November is the first of the season, not a guarantee.
- Rohtang Pass, early in the month, with the online permit. Rohtang closes to traffic whenever it snows and shuts for the season roughly from late November; in a recent season, traffic beyond Gulaba was stopped on 27 November.
- Upper Kinnaur, where the high villages around Kalpa and Chitkul can see the season’s first snow late in the month. Treat it as weather luck, not a plan.
If snow underfoot is the point of the trip, our Himachal winter snow guide explains when and where it actually snows, and Himachal in December covers the Christmas–New Year weeks.
Which roads and passes close in November?
The main circuits stay open and normal all month: Shimla, Kufri, Narkanda, Kullu, Manali, Solang, Dharamshala, Dalhousie and the road to Kinnaur. What changes is the high country.
| Route | November status | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Manali – Kaza over Kunzum Pass | Closes for the winter during November; officially shut on 23 November in 2024 | Do not plan Spiti from the Manali side in November |
| Rohtang Pass | Open with a permit until the first heavy snow; closes roughly from late November to late May | Go early in the month, and keep Sissu as the alternative |
| Atal Tunnel to Sissu and Keylong | Open, except for short closures after heavy snow | A good day trip from Manali; check the status the evening before |
| Shimla – Kinnaur – Spiti (NH-5) | Open; the winter route into Spiti | Possible with a local driver and a sturdy vehicle; late November is properly cold |
Road and pass status changes quickly after a snowfall. We check it with drivers on the ground the evening before each drive.
Where should you go in Himachal in November?
| Destination | Why go in November | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Shimla, Kufri and Narkanda | Mild, sunny days, the Mall without the crowds, and long views of the snow peaks from Narkanda | The easiest first stop from Chandigarh. No snow in town |
| Manali, Solang and Naggar | Clear skies, snow on the surrounding peaks, the cafés of Old Manali, and the quietest weeks of the year after Diwali | Nights near freezing; Solang is usually still without snow |
| Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj | The mildest days of the hill bases and sharp views of the Dhauladhar | McLeod Ganj is noticeably colder than Dharamshala town |
| Kinnaur: Sangla and Kalpa | The last clear weeks before deep winter, with the Kinnaur Kailash range above Kalpa; the Lavi Fair at Rampur on the way, 11–14 November | Long drives and very cold nights; plan seven nights or more |
| Tirthan and Jibhi | Quiet valleys, wood-fired homestays and short walks | Higher roads such as Jalori Pass can close after snow; check before you go |
The International Lavi Fair at Rampur Bushahr is an old trade fair held every year from 11 to 14 November. Traders from Kinnaur bring woollens, dry fruits and herbs, and the evenings have cultural programmes and nati dancing. It fits naturally into a Shimla–Kinnaur route.
How many days, and which route?
| Plan | Route | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 5 nights | Shimla 2 and Manali 3, by private car from Chandigarh; or a Volvo to Manali with a private car for sightseeing | A first Himachal trip, couples, families |
| 6 nights | Shimla 2, Manali 3, and one night in Narkanda or Naggar | A slower pace and fewer long days |
| 6 nights | Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj 3, Dalhousie and Khajjiar 3 | Senior travellers and anyone who wants milder nights |
| 7–8 nights | Shimla, Narkanda, Sangla and Kalpa, with the Lavi Fair at Rampur if your dates fit | Travellers who have done Shimla and Manali before |
Our Shimla–Manali itinerary and Kinnaur valley itinerary show these routes day by day.

Private car or Volvo in November?
Both work, because the main roads are in their best condition of the year. A private car throughout suits families, senior travellers and anyone visiting Kinnaur or Dharamshala, where the car is the trip. A Volvo-plus-car package — an overnight Volvo from Delhi to Manali and back, with a private car for all the sightseeing in the valley — is the combination most of our November travellers use for Manali, and our Manali Volvo itinerary sets it out.
Either way, keep the long drives off 5–6 and 11–12 November, start early because the light goes by about half past five, and avoid driving the last stretch after dark on cold nights.
What decides the price of a November trip?
We do not publish fixed prices, because a private trip is built around your dates, your hotels and your group. These are the things that move the quotation most:
- Your dates. The weeks after Diwali, from about 12 November, are the best value of the autumn. The Diwali week and the Guru Nanak Jayanti weekend cost more and need early booking.
- Hotel level and heating. A comfortable heated room, a boutique hotel with a view, or a luxury property.
- Nights and bases. How many nights, and how many times you change hotels.
- Transport. A Volvo with a car in the valley, or a private car throughout; Kinnaur needs longer driving days.
Every quotation is itemised and built to your exact dates. Our Himachal tour cost page explains the other variables.
What to pack for Himachal in November
- Layers for a big gap between day and night: a thermal base layer, a fleece or sweater, and a warm jacket for evenings.
- Gloves, a woollen cap and warm socks for Manali, McLeod Ganj and Kinnaur.
- Closed shoes with grip; you will not need snow boots unless you are going to Sissu or Kinnaur late in the month.
- Sunscreen and sunglasses: the sun is strong at altitude even when the air is cold.
- A moisturiser and lip balm: the air is very dry.
Mistakes to avoid in November
- Driving up on 5–6 November or back on 11–12 November. Plan the road days either side.
- Expecting snow in Manali or Shimla. In November the snow is on the peaks; for snow underfoot, wait for the second half of January.
- Planning Rohtang or Spiti-from-Manali late in the month. Kunzum and Rohtang close as winter sets in.
- Booking a room without asking about night heating. It is the most common November complaint.
- Leaving Christmas plans until December. If you also want the hills over Christmas and New Year, fix the good hotels by the end of October and Volvo seats by mid-November.
