Fly into Delhi, not Jaipur. Apply for India’s e-Visa at least four days before you leave (Japanese passport holders can also get a visa on arrival). Go between October and March. Plan 12 nights if the Taj Mahal is on your list, or 9 nights for Rajasthan alone. End the trip in Udaipur and fly back to Delhi or Mumbai for your flight home. From North America that means a 14-to-16-hour non-stop flight, so the first day should be a rest day. From Europe or Japan it is about 8–9 hours, and the time difference is much easier to absorb.
This guide covers the parts of a Rajasthan trip that depend on where you live: which airlines fly non-stop to Delhi from your country, which visa your passport needs, the time difference and how to plan around it, the busiest weeks to avoid, a 12-night private route, how pricing works, and the official travel advice. For the cities themselves, hotels and longer routes, see our guide to planning a private Rajasthan holiday. We are a private tour operator based in India, and we plan these trips for overseas guests every winter.
- Fly into Delhi. There are no flights to Jaipur or Udaipur from North America, Europe or Japan. Air India flies non-stop to Delhi from New York JFK, Newark, Chicago and San Francisco; Air India and Air Canada fly non-stop from Toronto; Air India flies from Vancouver.
- From Europe and Japan: non-stop flights to Delhi from London, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Istanbul and Helsinki, among others, about 8–9 hours. From Tokyo, JAL flies from Haneda and, since January 2026, Narita; Air India flies from Haneda.
- Visa: US, Canadian, UK, EU and Japanese passport holders can use India’s e-Visa. Apply at least 4 and up to 120 days before arrival. Japanese nationals can also get a visa on arrival at Delhi and five other airports.
- Best months: October to March. November to February is the best and the busiest; Christmas to New Year is the peak.
- Time difference in winter: India is 10½ hours ahead of New York and Toronto, 13½ hours ahead of California and Vancouver, 4½ hours ahead of Paris and Frankfurt, and 3½ hours behind Tokyo.
- Trip length: 12 nights for Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan; 9 nights for Rajasthan only.
- Quotations: guests from outside India are quoted in US dollars for their exact dates and pay by international bank transfer.
How do you fly to Rajasthan from the USA, Canada, Europe or Japan?
Every long-haul trip to Rajasthan starts in Delhi. Jaipur is a 4–5-hour drive from Delhi airport, and Udaipur has domestic flights to Delhi and Mumbai, so the simplest plan is to land in Delhi and fly home from Udaipur through Delhi or Mumbai. That way you never drive back the way you came.
| Flying from | Non-stop to Delhi | Time in the air |
|---|---|---|
| USA | Air India from New York JFK, Newark, Chicago O’Hare and San Francisco. Air India dropped Washington Dulles in September 2025. Other US cities connect through these, Europe or the Gulf | About 14–16 hours |
| Canada | Toronto: Air India and Air Canada, the busiest route. Vancouver: Air India, about five flights a week. Montreal: Air Canada, seasonal, expected back no earlier than late October 2026 | Overnight non-stop |
| UK and Europe | London Heathrow: British Airways and Air India. Frankfurt and Munich: Lufthansa. Zurich: SWISS, daily. Turkish via Istanbul, Finnair via Helsinki. Air India also flies non-stop to India from Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Milan, Paris, Rome, Vienna and Zurich | About 8–9 hours |
| Japan | JAL from Tokyo Haneda and, since 17 January 2026, Tokyo Narita. Air India from Haneda, with ANA connections across Japan | About 9 hours |
Airline schedules change every season. Check your exact dates before you book, and send us your flight numbers once you have them; the itinerary is built around them.
Do you need a visa for India?
Yes, every one of these passports needs a visa, and for a holiday the e-Visa is the easiest. You apply online on the Government of India’s official site (indianvisaonline.gov.in), at least 4 days and no more than 120 days before you arrive. Use only the official site: many look-alike websites charge extra for the same visa.
| Passport | What you need | When to apply |
|---|---|---|
| United States | e-Tourist visa (30 days, 1 year or 5 years) | 4 to 120 days before arrival |
| Canada | e-Tourist visa (30 days, 1 year or 5 years) | 4 to 120 days before arrival |
| UK and EU countries | e-Tourist visa (30 days, 1 year or 5 years) | 4 to 120 days before arrival |
| Japan | e-Tourist visa, or visa on arrival at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kolkata, valid up to 60 days | e-Visa: 4 to 120 days before. Visa on arrival: at the airport, with a passport valid for at least 6 months and a return ticket |
Your visa depends on your passport, not on where you live. A Japanese resident with a US passport, for example, follows the US rules. If you hold an OCI card, you do not need a visa at all.
When should you go, and which weeks are busiest?
Rajasthan’s season runs from October to March. Days are warm and dry, nights are cool, and by December the desert nights can be cold. November to February is the best weather and the busiest time; April to June is very hot, and July to September is the monsoon.
| When | What it is like | How to plan |
|---|---|---|
| October | Warm days, the season opening, fewer visitors | Good value; book a pool at the hotel |
| Diwali, 8 November 2026 | The festival of lights; cities lit up, some shops shut, Indian family travel at its peak | Beautiful, but book hotels early |
| Pushkar Camel Fair, 17–24 November 2026 | The fair and its crowds; tented camps sell out | Add 2 nights to the route if you want it |
| US Thanksgiving week, from 26 November 2026 | A popular week for Americans to travel | Book flights early |
| Christmas to New Year | The peak of the year; prices highest, hotels full, gala dinners compulsory at some hotels | Book by the end of October |
| Japan’s year-end holidays | Overlaps with the Indian peak above | Book hotels by the end of October |
| Mid-January to March | Clear days, cool nights, the best value of the high season | Our pick for a first visit |
How do you beat jet lag on a Rajasthan trip?
The flight is the hardest part of a Rajasthan trip from North America. India does not change its clocks, so the time difference shifts by an hour when your clocks change. Europe goes back on 25 October 2026, and the US and Canada on 1 November 2026.
| Where you live | India time, November to March |
|---|---|
| New York, Toronto, Montreal | 10½ hours ahead |
| Chicago | 11½ hours ahead |
| San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vancouver | 13½ hours ahead |
| London | 5½ hours ahead |
| Paris, Frankfurt, Zurich, Amsterdam, Rome | 4½ hours ahead |
| Tokyo | 3½ hours behind |
Four planning rules make the difference:
- Make day one a rest day. From North America, plan nothing on the first day except a short walk and an early night. From Europe and Japan, an afternoon of light sightseeing is fine.
- Do the long drives later. The Delhi–Agra and Agra–Jaipur drives are 4–5 hours each; do them on days 3 and 4, not the morning after you land.
- Plan the Taj Mahal around Friday. It is closed on Fridays, and a sunrise visit is far better than midday, so the Agra night should fall on any other day of the week.
- Check your departure time. If your flight home leaves late at night or before dawn, keep a hotel room near the airport for the last day, so you can rest and shower before the long flight.
What does a 12-night private route look like?
This is the route we suggest most often for a first visit from overseas: Delhi and the Taj Mahal, then Rajasthan’s three great cities, ending in Udaipur. It keeps every drive under seven hours and gives each city at least two nights.
| Nights | Where | Getting there | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Delhi | Arrive; private transfer from the airport | Rest, then Old and New Delhi with a guide on day 2 |
| 3 | Agra | Delhi → Agra, 230 km, about 4 hours | The Taj Mahal at sunrise (not on a Friday), the Agra Fort |
| 4–6 | Jaipur | Agra → Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri, 240 km, 4–5 hours | Amber Fort early in the morning, the City Palace, the old walled city, a block-printing workshop |
| 7–8 | Jodhpur | Jaipur → Jodhpur, 335 km, about 6 hours | Mehrangarh Fort and the blue old town |
| 9–11 | Udaipur | Jodhpur → Udaipur, about 5 hours direct, or via the Ranakpur temple | Lake Pichola, the City Palace, and one day with nothing planned |
| 12 | Delhi or Mumbai | Flight from Udaipur | A night near the airport before the flight home |
With 14 nights, add two nights at Ranthambore between Agra and Jaipur for tiger safaris (Jaipur to Ranthambore is about 180 km, 3–4 hours), or two nights in Jaisalmer and the Thar Desert after Jodhpur. With 9 nights and no Taj Mahal, do one night in Delhi, three in Jaipur, two in Jodhpur and three in Udaipur. Our Golden Triangle and Rajasthan itinerary shows the full day-by-day version.
Flying in from the US, Canada, Europe or Japan?
Send us your arrival and departure flights and how many nights you have — we will fit the route to your flight times, with hotels, a private car and driver and guides, and quote it in US dollars.
What decides the price of a private Rajasthan tour?
A private trip has no fixed price, because it is built around your dates, your hotels and your group. Five things move the quotation most:
- Hotel level. Heritage and 4-star hotels, landmark 5-star and palace hotels, or the iconic palaces such as Rambagh, Umaid Bhawan and the Lake Palace. This is the biggest single factor.
- Dates. Christmas to New Year is the most expensive time of the year; October and mid-January to March are better value.
- Length and pace. The number of nights and the number of hotel changes.
- Group size. The car, driver and guides cost the same for two people as for four.
- Extras. Tiger safaris at Ranthambore, private experiences, and the domestic flight from Udaipur.
Your quotation is itemized and in US dollars. International flights, visa fees and travel insurance are not included. Our Rajasthan tour packages page shows routes at each hotel level.
Is Rajasthan safe for American, Canadian, European and Japanese travelers?
Rajasthan is one of India’s most visited states, and the route above is the standard first-time route. Read your government’s advice before you go:
- United States: the State Department rates India at Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”. Its “do not travel” areas are Jammu and Kashmir (except eastern Ladakh) and the India–Pakistan border area. None of the cities on this route is near them.
- Canada: “Exercise a high degree of caution” across India. It also advises against all travel within 10 km of the Pakistan border, which includes part of Rajasthan’s far west. If you add Jaisalmer, we keep the desert day trips away from that strip.
- UK, EU and Japan: check the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, your foreign ministry, or Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs before you travel.
The practical risks are the ones every visitor meets: traffic, touts at the big monuments, and stomach upsets. A private car with the same driver throughout, booked guides at the forts, no highway driving after dark and bottled or filtered water deal with most of them. Our India safety guide covers the rest.
How does booking with an India-based operator work?
Booking directly with a local operator can cost less than booking through an agency at home, because there is one company between you and the hotels, not two. Here is how it works with us:
- You send your dates, flights and hotel style. A travel designer sends back a day-by-day route and an itemized quotation, usually within one working day.
- You are quoted in US dollars and pay by international bank transfer. Every booking comes with a proper GST invoice.
- What is included is written down: hotels, meals, the car and driver (including the driver’s food and lodging), guides, monument entries if you choose them, the domestic flight, and 24-hour support on the trip.
- Who we are: Itinerary Diary is operated by Vayu Tour and Travels Pvt. Ltd., registered with India’s Ministry of Tourism (NIDHI ID EHP000132), rated 5.0 from 269 Google reviews, with offices in Shimla, New Delhi and Brampton, Canada.
Our guide to comparing two tour quotations lists what any quotation should spell out, and our private car and driver guide explains tipping, drive times and road safety.

Mistakes to avoid
- Flying into Jaipur through a Gulf hub to “save a day”. It rarely saves time and adds a connection. Land in Delhi.
- Sightseeing the morning after a 15-hour flight. Day one is for sleep.
- Booking the Taj Mahal on a Friday. It is closed.
- Buying the visa from a look-alike website. Use indianvisaonline.gov.in only.
- One night per city. You arrive tired, see one thing and leave. Two nights is the minimum.
- Leaving Christmas to New Year hotels until November. The best palace hotels fill first.
- Driving back to Delhi from Udaipur. It is a long day in the car; the flight takes about an hour and a half.
