Fly into Delhi, not Jaipur. Apply for India’s e-Visa at least four days before you leave (Japanese passport holders can also get a visa on arrival). Go between October and March. Plan 12 nights if the Taj Mahal is on your list, or 9 nights for Rajasthan alone. End the trip in Udaipur and fly back to Delhi or Mumbai for your flight home. From North America that means a 14-to-16-hour non-stop flight, so the first day should be a rest day. From Europe or Japan it is about 8–9 hours, and the time difference is much easier to absorb.

This guide covers the parts of a Rajasthan trip that depend on where you live: which airlines fly non-stop to Delhi from your country, which visa your passport needs, the time difference and how to plan around it, the busiest weeks to avoid, a 12-night private route, how pricing works, and the official travel advice. For the cities themselves, hotels and longer routes, see our guide to planning a private Rajasthan holiday. We are a private tour operator based in India, and we plan these trips for overseas guests every winter.

How do you fly to Rajasthan from the USA, Canada, Europe or Japan?

Every long-haul trip to Rajasthan starts in Delhi. Jaipur is a 4–5-hour drive from Delhi airport, and Udaipur has domestic flights to Delhi and Mumbai, so the simplest plan is to land in Delhi and fly home from Udaipur through Delhi or Mumbai. That way you never drive back the way you came.

Do you need a visa for India?

Yes, every one of these passports needs a visa, and for a holiday the e-Visa is the easiest. You apply online on the Government of India’s official site (indianvisaonline.gov.in), at least 4 days and no more than 120 days before you arrive. Use only the official site: many look-alike websites charge extra for the same visa.

PassportWhat you needWhen to apply
United Statese-Tourist visa (30 days, 1 year or 5 years)4 to 120 days before arrival
Canadae-Tourist visa (30 days, 1 year or 5 years)4 to 120 days before arrival
UK and EU countriese-Tourist visa (30 days, 1 year or 5 years)4 to 120 days before arrival
Japane-Tourist visa, or visa on arrival at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kolkata, valid up to 60 dayse-Visa: 4 to 120 days before. Visa on arrival: at the airport, with a passport valid for at least 6 months and a return ticket

Your visa depends on your passport, not on where you live. A Japanese resident with a US passport, for example, follows the US rules. If you hold an OCI card, you do not need a visa at all.

When should you go, and which weeks are busiest?

Rajasthan’s season runs from October to March. Days are warm and dry, nights are cool, and by December the desert nights can be cold. November to February is the best weather and the busiest time; April to June is very hot, and July to September is the monsoon.

WhenWhat it is likeHow to plan
OctoberWarm days, the season opening, fewer visitorsGood value; book a pool at the hotel
Diwali, 8 November 2026The festival of lights; cities lit up, some shops shut, Indian family travel at its peakBeautiful, but book hotels early

How do you beat jet lag on a Rajasthan trip?

The flight is the hardest part of a Rajasthan trip from North America. India does not change its clocks, so the time difference shifts by an hour when your clocks change. Europe goes back on 25 October 2026, and the US and Canada on 1 November 2026.

Where you liveIndia time, November to March
New York, Toronto, Montreal10½ hours ahead
Chicago11½ hours ahead
San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vancouver13½ hours ahead
London5½ hours ahead
Paris, Frankfurt, Zurich, Amsterdam, Rome4½ hours ahead
Tokyo3½ hours behind

Four planning rules make the difference:

What does a 12-night private route look like?

This is the route we suggest most often for a first visit from overseas: Delhi and the Taj Mahal, then Rajasthan’s three great cities, ending in Udaipur. It keeps every drive under seven hours and gives each city at least two nights.

NightsWhereGetting thereWhy
1–2DelhiArrive; private transfer from the airportRest, then Old and New Delhi with a guide on day 2
3AgraDelhi → Agra, 230 km, about 4 hoursThe Taj Mahal at sunrise (not on a Friday), the Agra Fort
4–6JaipurAgra → Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri, 240 km, 4–5 hoursAmber Fort early in the morning, the City Palace, the old walled city, a block-printing workshop
7–8JodhpurJaipur → Jodhpur, 335 km, about 6 hoursMehrangarh Fort and the blue old town
9–11UdaipurJodhpur → Udaipur, about 5 hours direct, or via the Ranakpur templeLake Pichola, the City Palace, and one day with nothing planned
12Delhi or MumbaiFlight from UdaipurA night near the airport before the flight home

With 14 nights, add two nights at Ranthambore between Agra and Jaipur for tiger safaris (Jaipur to Ranthambore is about 180 km, 3–4 hours), or two nights in Jaisalmer and the Thar Desert after Jodhpur. With 9 nights and no Taj Mahal, do one night in Delhi, three in Jaipur, two in Jodhpur and three in Udaipur. Our Golden Triangle and Rajasthan itinerary shows the full day-by-day version.

Flying in from the US, Canada, Europe or Japan?

Send us your arrival and departure flights and how many nights you have — we will fit the route to your flight times, with hotels, a private car and driver and guides, and quote it in US dollars.

What decides the price of a private Rajasthan tour?

A private trip has no fixed price, because it is built around your dates, your hotels and your group. Five things move the quotation most:

Your quotation is itemized and in US dollars. International flights, visa fees and travel insurance are not included. Our Rajasthan tour packages page shows routes at each hotel level.

Is Rajasthan safe for American, Canadian, European and Japanese travelers?

Rajasthan is one of India’s most visited states, and the route above is the standard first-time route. Read your government’s advice before you go:

The practical risks are the ones every visitor meets: traffic, touts at the big monuments, and stomach upsets. A private car with the same driver throughout, booked guides at the forts, no highway driving after dark and bottled or filtered water deal with most of them. Our India safety guide covers the rest.

How does booking with an India-based operator work?

Booking directly with a local operator can cost less than booking through an agency at home, because there is one company between you and the hotels, not two. Here is how it works with us:

Our guide to comparing two tour quotations lists what any quotation should spell out, and our private car and driver guide explains tipping, drive times and road safety.

Want a quotation in US dollars?

Tell us your passport, your dates, how many are traveling and your hotel style — you will get a day-by-day route, an itemized price and one person who looks after the trip from start to finish.

Mistakes to avoid

Frequently Asked Questions

Do US citizens need a visa for India?
Yes. US citizens can apply online for India’s e-Tourist visa on the official site, indianvisaonline.gov.in, at least 4 and up to 120 days before arrival. It is issued for 30 days, 1 year or 5 years.
Can Japanese citizens get a visa on arrival in India?
Yes. Japanese nationals can get a visa on arrival at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata airports, for tourism, for up to 60 days. The passport must be valid for at least six months. The e-Visa is also available and saves time at the airport.
Are there non-stop flights from the USA to Delhi?
Yes. Air India flies non-stop to Delhi from New York JFK, Newark, Chicago O’Hare and San Francisco, about 14–16 hours. Other US cities connect through these airports, Europe or the Gulf.
Are there direct flights from Canada to Delhi?
Yes. Air India and Air Canada fly non-stop from Toronto, and Air India flies from Vancouver. Air Canada’s seasonal Montreal–Delhi flight was expected back no earlier than late October 2026.
Can I fly directly to Jaipur or Udaipur from the US, Europe or Japan?
No. Fly into Delhi and drive to Jaipur in 4–5 hours, or start in Delhi and Agra first. Udaipur has domestic flights to Delhi and Mumbai, which makes it the best place to end the trip.
How many days do I need for Rajasthan from overseas?
Twelve nights covers Delhi, the Taj Mahal at Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur without rushing. Nine nights is enough for Rajasthan alone. Fourteen nights lets you add Ranthambore for tigers or Jaisalmer for the desert.
What is the best time to visit Rajasthan from the US or Europe?
October to March. November to February has the best weather and the most visitors. Mid-January to March is our pick for a first visit; Christmas to New Year is the most expensive time.
How is a private Rajasthan tour priced for overseas guests?
Every private trip is quoted for your dates, hotels and group size, in US dollars, with every item listed. The hotel level and the dates move the price most. International flights, visa fees and travel insurance are not included.
Is Rajasthan safe for American travelers?
The US State Department rates India at Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, and its “do not travel” areas are Jammu and Kashmir and the India–Pakistan border area, none of them on a Rajasthan route. A private car and driver, booked guides and no highway driving after dark deal with most everyday risks.
How do I pay an Indian tour operator from abroad?
With us, guests from outside India are quoted in US dollars and pay by international bank transfer, with a GST invoice. The quotation lists exactly what is included and excluded.
