Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall at Indira Gandhi International with a name board, and you are at your hotel within the hour. Most long-haul flights from North America and Europe land late at night or early morning, so today is deliberately empty — sleep, eat when your body asks rather than when the clock says, and let the eight-and-a-half-hour time difference settle. Your tour manager calls in the afternoon to walk through the days ahead.

Today’s highlights

  • Private airport transfer, met inside arrivals with a name board.
  • Check in and rest — no sightseeing scheduled today.
  • A briefing call from your tour manager with the plan for the trip.
  • Optional: an early dinner at the hotel rather than venturing out jet-lagged.
Good to know: Arrival day is kept free on purpose. If your flight lands in the morning we request an early check-in; if it lands at 2am we book the previous night so your room is ready when you walk in.

Delhi Delhi

Delhi is really two cities and today you see both. The morning belongs to Old Delhi — Jama Masjid’s vast red sandstone courtyard, then a cycle-rickshaw through the lanes of Chandni Chowk where the spice market has traded on the same corner for three centuries. After lunch the mood changes completely: the wide colonial avenues of Lutyens’ Delhi, Humayun’s Tomb, and the Qutub Minar complex.

Today’s highlights

  • Jama Masjid and a cycle-rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk.
  • Raj Ghat and the ceremonial avenue past Rashtrapati Bhavan and India Gate.
  • Humayun’s Tomb — the Mughal garden tomb the Taj Mahal was modelled on.
  • The Qutub Minar complex and its 4th-century iron pillar.
Good to know: Old Delhi is intense — crowded, loud and wonderful. If that is not your pace, say so and we swap the rickshaw ride for the Gandhi Smriti museum and a slower morning.

🍽️ Taste of the day

Parathas at Paranthe Wali Gali, and the chaat that Delhi argues about endlessly.

💡 Good to know

The Yamuna Expressway makes this one of the easiest drives in northern India — a genuine motorway, not a national highway with village crossings. You leave after breakfast and are in Agra for lunch. The afternoon goes to Agra Fort, the walled Mughal city where Shah Jahan spent his final years under house arrest, looking downriver at the tomb he had built for his wife.

Today’s highlights

  • A comfortable motorway drive on the Yamuna Expressway.
  • Agra Fort — the Mughal capital before Delhi, and a UNESCO site in its own right.
  • The first distant view of the Taj across the river at dusk from Mehtab Bagh.
  • An early night before a sunrise start.
Good to know: We visit the Taj at sunrise tomorrow rather than this afternoon. The light is better, the crowds are a fraction of the size, and the marble changes colour as the sun comes up. It is worth the alarm.

🔎 Hidden gem

Itimad-ud-Daulah, the “Baby Taj” — the first Mughal structure built entirely in white marble, and the design step between Humayun’s Tomb and the Taj.

🍽️ Taste of the day

Mughlai food as Agra does it, and petha, the translucent ash-gourd sweet the city is known for.

💡 Good to know

You are at the East Gate before it opens. The Taj comes out of the dark as a grey outline, turns pink, then gold, then the white everyone expects — and for the first hour there are few enough people that you can actually stand still and look at it. Back for breakfast, then the road west into Rajasthan, stopping at Fatehpur Sikri, the perfectly preserved Mughal capital that was abandoned after fourteen years.

Today’s highlights

  • The Taj Mahal at sunrise, before the day’s crowds.
  • Breakfast back at the hotel afterwards — not a rushed departure.
  • Fatehpur Sikri, a UNESCO site and a ghost city in red sandstone.
  • Arrive Jaipur in the evening; the Pink City begins tomorrow.
Good to know: Sunrise means leaving the hotel around 5.30am depending on the season. If that does not appeal, we can move the visit to late afternoon instead — the light is still good and the crowds thin again after 4pm.

🍽️ Taste of the day

A packed breakfast or a proper sit-down at the hotel — we do not do rushed roadside stops on this leg.

Amber first, and early — the fort sits above a lake eleven kilometres north of the city and it is a different place at 8am than at noon. Then down into the walled city itself: the City Palace where the royal family still lives in part of the complex, Jantar Mantar’s giant stone astronomical instruments, and Hawa Mahal’s honeycomb facade, built so the women of the court could watch the street without being seen.

Today’s highlights

  • Amber Fort early, ahead of the heat and the crowds.
  • The City Palace and its textile and armoury collections.
  • Jantar Mantar — a UNESCO site and the largest stone sundial in the world.
  • Hawa Mahal and a walk through the old city bazaars.
Good to know: Reach Amber by 8am. The jeep ascent is gentle and works for grandparents and small children; we do not use the elephants.

A deliberately unstructured day, and on a twelve-day trip it earns its place. Some travellers spend it with a block-printing or blue-pottery artisan; some go to Ranthambore for a morning tiger safari and come back; some do very little beyond a long lunch and the hotel pool. Your guide and car are available either way.

Today’s highlights

  • A day built around what you actually want to do.
  • Optional: a block-printing or blue-pottery masterclass with a working artisan.
  • Optional: a morning safari at Ranthambore, returning the same evening.
  • Optional: Nahargarh Fort at sunset above the city lights.
Good to know: If tigers matter to you, tell us at the enquiry stage. Ranthambore is best done as an overnight rather than a long day trip, and we would restructure the itinerary rather than squeeze it in.

The longest drive of the trip, broken by Pushkar. The town sits around a small sacred lake ringed by fifty-two bathing ghats, and it holds one of the very few temples in the world dedicated to Brahma. It is a working pilgrimage town, not a monument, and it is a genuinely different register from the forts and palaces on either side of it. Onward to Jodhpur in the late afternoon.

Today’s highlights

  • Pushkar’s sacred lake, ghats and Brahma temple.
  • A walk through the bazaar — silver, textiles and Rajasthani leather.
  • Arrive Jodhpur in the evening, under the walls of Mehrangarh.
  • A comfortable, well-broken drive rather than a single long haul.
Good to know: This is the leg where a flight helps if your party would rather not spend a day in the car. Jaipur to Jodhpur is a short domestic hop; we can build it in and use the saved time in Jodhpur instead.

Mehrangarh is the finest fort in Rajasthan and arguably in India — 120 metres of sheer rock, walls that were never breached, and a museum inside that is properly curated rather than dusty. Afterwards you walk down into the blue city itself, the tangle of indigo-washed houses beneath the ramparts, and end at Jaswant Thada, the white marble cenotaph on the ridge opposite.

A shorter, prettier drive than yesterday, and Ranakpur is the reason to make it. The 15th-century Jain temple is carved from white marble on 1,444 pillars, no two of them alike, in a wooded valley in the Aravallis. It is quiet, it is cool, and it is one of the genuinely extraordinary buildings in India. On to Udaipur in the afternoon.

Today’s highlights

  • Ranakpur Jain temple — 1,444 individually carved marble pillars.
  • The Aravalli hill road, a real change of landscape after the desert.
  • Arrive Udaipur, the lake city, in the late afternoon.

Udaipur is the softest city in Rajasthan and the one most people are sorry to leave. The City Palace runs for half a kilometre along the shore of Lake Pichola and is still partly the Maharana’s residence; the museum inside is a sequence of courtyards, mirrored halls and balconies over the water. In the late afternoon you take a private boat on the lake, which is when the light is worth the whole trip.

Today’s highlights

  • The City Palace complex and its museum.
  • Jagdish Temple and the old town lanes around it.
  • A private boat on Lake Pichola in the late afternoon.
  • Saheliyon ki Bari, the garden built for the queen’s attendants.

Two honest options and no wrong answer. Kumbhalgarh is a day trip into the hills to a 15th-century hill fort whose perimeter wall runs for some 36 kilometres along the ridge — a UNESCO site, dramatic, and comfortably done in a day with a picnic lunch. Or you stay in Udaipur and do nothing in particular, which after ten days of forts is a defensible choice.

Today’s highlights

  • Kumbhalgarh Fort and its ridge-top wall — a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The birthplace of Maharana Pratap, inside the fort complex.
  • Or: a full day in Udaipur with no schedule at all.
  • Either way, your last full day is yours to choose.

Yes — it is designed for exactly that. It covers the three cities of the Golden Triangle and the three great Rajasthani ones, it never asks you to change hotels two nights running except on travel days, and every arrival, drive and monument is handled for you. Day one is deliberately left empty for jet lag.

You arrive at and depart from Indira Gandhi International in Delhi (DEL), which has the widest choice of direct flights from North America, the UK and Europe. The final day uses a short domestic flight from Udaipur back to Delhi so you are not driving on your departure day.

Yes. The car and chauffeur are yours alone for the full twelve days — no shared coaches, no fixed departures and no other travellers. Guides are engaged city by city, so you get a specialist in each place rather than one person covering everything.

Yes, in every city on this route. Guides in other languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian — can usually be arranged with enough notice; tell us at the enquiry stage as availability varies by city and season.

It is a full itinerary, and we say so honestly. There are two multi-night stops in Jaipur and Udaipur, one flexible day in each, and only one long drive — Jaipur to Jodhpur via Pushkar. If you would rather go slower, the two commonest changes are flying that leg or dropping Agra to a single night.

On some legs, yes. Jaipur to Jodhpur and Udaipur to Delhi are the two where a domestic flight makes a real difference. Delhi–Agra and Agra–Jaipur are better by road; the Yamuna Expressway is a genuine motorway and flying adds airport time without saving any.

Yes, and this route is built around them. Depending on your budget and dates that can mean Rambagh Palace in Jaipur, Umaid Bhawan or RAAS in Jodhpur, and Taj Lake Palace or Udaivilas in Udaipur, alongside smaller restored havelis. Final properties depend on availability for your dates and we confirm them in writing before you pay.

October to March. Days are warm and clear, evenings are cool, and the forts and desert are comfortable to walk. April to June is very hot across this route; July to September brings the monsoon, which is green and quiet but can affect road times.

Largely yes, with adjustments. Amber Fort is reached by jeep, Mehrangarh has a lift, and Udaipur is easy on foot. Fatehpur Sikri and Kumbhalgarh involve the most walking on uneven stone; both can be shortened or swapped. Tell us in advance and we build the itinerary around it rather than improvising on the day.

Yes. Families usually keep the fort days and trade one sightseeing morning for the hotel pool, and we add interconnecting rooms where a property offers them. The elephant rides at Amber are not part of our itinerary; we use jeeps.

Yes. Ranthambore for tigers adds two nights and slots in between Jaipur and Jodhpur. Jaisalmer and the Thar add two to three. Varanasi is a flight from Delhi or Udaipur and adds two to three nights — it is the most common extension on this itinerary for travellers who want the Ganges as well as the palaces.

Included: handpicked stays with breakfast, the private car and chauffeur throughout, all transfers and drives, English-speaking guides in each city, a dedicated tour manager, 24×7 support, all applicable taxes and a GST invoice. Not included: international and domestic flights unless you ask us to book them, lunches and dinners unless specified, monument entry fees unless added, and travel insurance, which we recommend.

Most nationalities need an e-Visa, applied for online in advance of travel. Requirements, fees and processing times change, so check the Government of India e-Visa portal for your own nationality before booking flights. We do not process visas, but we will tell you what your itinerary needs.

There is no fixed price, because nothing about it is fixed. The cost depends on your travel dates, hotel category, room type, number of travellers, whether you add domestic flights, and which experiences you want. Send us your dates and party size and you will have a written, itemised quotation with named hotels — usually within one working day.

You share your dates and preferences, we send a tailored itinerary and quotation, and we revise it until it is right. Once you confirm, a deposit secures the hotels and the balance is due before travel. Every booking comes with a GST invoice and a written cancellation policy before you pay anything.

For October to March travel, and especially for the heritage and palace properties, three to six months is sensible — the best rooms in Udaipur and Jaipur go early. Shorter notice is often still workable, but the hotel choice narrows.

Tell your tour manager and we move the pieces. Airport transfers are rescheduled at no charge, and where a hotel night or a guide has to shift we handle it. That is the practical difference between a private itinerary and a fixed departure.
