To Haridwar, in time for the fire on the water

The whole first day is arranged around one hour at dusk. Leave Delhi in the morning by car, or take the Vande Bharat from Anand Vihar and let your driver meet you at Haridwar station; either way you are checked in by mid-afternoon. At Har Ki Pauri, as the light goes, lamps are lit along the ghat, the chant rises, and the river carries away thousands of small leaf-boats of flowers and flame. Your guide finds you a place to stand and tells you what you are watching.
Today’s highlights
- Delhi to Haridwar by private car, or by the Vande Bharat with your car at the station.
- Check in, then a walk through the bazaar lanes to the river.
- The Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri with your guide, from a good position on the ghat.
- Dinner in the old town; Haridwar is vegetarian and alcohol-free, and so is dinner.

🏨 Where to stay
Haridwar’s better hotels sit a little away from the old town, on or near the river; a short drive to the ghat is normal. It is a pilgrim city first and a hotel city second, and we choose accordingly.
✨ Signature experience
Standing on Har Ki Pauri as the aarti begins. It is one of the great sights of northern India and it costs nothing.
🚆 The train option
The Vande Bharat from Anand Vihar reaches Haridwar in about four hours and runs six days a week, not on Thursdays. In July and August the Kanwar Yatra closes stretches of the Delhi–Haridwar highway for a week or more; in those weeks the train is the only sensible way in.
🙏 Respect
Har Ki Pauri is a place of worship. Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off where everyone else’s are, and ask before photographing people at prayer.
💡 Good to know
Haridwar is a dry, vegetarian city by long custom. Plan on it rather than against it; the food in the old town is very good.
