Valley of Flowers Trek

From 1 June to 31 October. In 2026 it opened on 1 June and closes on 31 October, as announced by the Forest Department. Outside those dates there is no trek, and any itinerary offering one is not honest.

For the densest flowers, mid-July to mid-August, which is the monsoon: low cloud, daily rain and a valley system prone to landslides. For clearer skies, drier trails, visible peaks and a reliable road, September to early October, with fewer flowers. Both are the real valley. We tell you the trade-off and let you choose.

Moderate. Roughly ten kilometres up from Pulna to Ghangaria on a paved pilgrim path, five to six hours with stops; a valley day of eight kilometres or more on foot; and ten kilometres down. Ghangaria is at about 3,000 metres and the valley higher. Reasonable fitness, a slow pace and proper rain gear are what it needs. Ponies and porters are available for anyone who would rather ride part of the way.

A helicopter service between Govindghat and Ghangaria operates in fair weather in season. We can arrange it and it is added at cost, but it is not guaranteed on any given day and it does not fly in the cloud that the peak-bloom weeks bring. Do not plan around it.

Yes. Entry to the Valley of Flowers National Park needs a Forest Department permit, arranged in your name; the fee is set by the department and added at cost. The park admits visitors from opening time, closes its gate to new entry in the late morning and requires everyone out by a set afternoon hour. There is no overnight stay inside the valley.

A village of lodges and dhabas at the head of the trail, at roughly 3,000 metres, that exists for this trek and for the Sikh pilgrimage to Hemkund Sahib. The lodges are basic: clean beds, bucket hot water in many, limited electricity in some. We choose the best of what exists and tell you exactly what that means before you book. It is the least luxurious itinerary we sell.

Yes, with an extra night at Ghangaria. The shrine and its glacial lake sit above 4,000 metres, roughly six kilometres and a steep climb above the village; it opened on 23 May in 2026. It is a serious walk at altitude, for many the highlight of the trip, and we build it in properly rather than as a casual add-on.

The peak-bloom weeks are monsoon weeks in Garhwal. In 2026 the Char Dham road was suspended for three days at the end of July and more than a hundred roads were shut on one day in mid-July. Your driver has the live picture, your tour manager reroutes or holds you at the nearest safe town, and the itinerary carries a buffer night at Srinagar and a recommended extra night at Rishikesh so that a closed road does not cost you the valley or a flight.

Waterproof jacket and trousers, a daypack with a rain cover, broken-in walking shoes, trekking poles, warm layers for the nights, dry socks, sun protection, your own medication, and travel insurance that covers trekking above 3,000 metres, which we require. One bag per person goes up on a porter or mule; everything else stays in the car.

For children who walk happily for five hours and for older travellers in good health with trekking experience, yes, at a slow pace. It is not a stroll: the altitude, the rain and the distances are real. Tell us honestly about fitness and health when you enquire and we will tell you honestly whether it suits.

Yes. Dehradun (Jolly Grant) is half an hour from Rishikesh and has nonstop flights from a dozen cities. Beyond Rishikesh the Garhwal is road-only; the Rishikesh–Karnaprayag railway is not due until December 2028.
