December is a good month for Kashmir if you want winter and can live without a promise of snow. Snow on the Gulmarg meadow usually arrives in the second half of the month, not the first. The coldest stretch, Chillai Kalan, begins on Monday 21 December. And from about 24 December to 2 January the whole valley runs as one continuous peak, with Gulmarg full. If snow underfoot is the point, travel after 20 December and book now. If value and quiet matter more, travel between 1 and 20 December.
This guide covers what December 2026 looks like date by date, what the weather records actually show, where you are likely to find snow, an itinerary built so the trip still works if the snow is late, getting there when fog grounds flights, heated hotels, what a private trip costs, and the Christmas–New Year crush. If you are choosing between Kashmir and Himachal for snow, read our Gulmarg vs Manali comparison first. This page assumes you have chosen Kashmir.
Is December a good time to visit Kashmir?
Yes, provided you are comfortable with real cold and understand that December is two different months. The first twenty days are dry, cold, clear and quiet, with some of the lowest hotel rates of the winter. The last eleven bring Chillai Kalan, the best odds of snow so far in the season, and the most crowded week of the Kashmir winter.
| Window | What you get | Crowds and prices | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–20 Dec | Clear, dry, cold days; frosty nights; snow on the high slopes above Gulmarg, often not yet on the meadow | Quiet; good-value rates before the Christmas bump | Couples, senior travellers, anyone who wants Srinagar and the valley without crowds |
| 21–23 Dec | Chillai Kalan begins; the coldest nights of the year start; better snow odds | Filling up, still bookable if you move now | Snow-seekers who want to arrive before the rush |
| 24 Dec–2 Jan | The best snow odds of the month; Christmas and New Year at the resorts | Peak: Gulmarg full, minimum stays, gala-dinner supplements, slow roads up to the resort | Families tied to school holidays who book early |
The December 2026 calendar
Three dates shape the month this year:
- Monday 21 December — Chillai Kalan, Kashmir's 40-day period of harshest cold, begins. It runs to 29 January.
- Friday 25 December — Christmas, which gives a Friday-to-Sunday long weekend.
- Friday 1 January 2027 — New Year's Day, another Friday-to-Sunday long weekend, with New Year's Eve on the Thursday.
In Rajasthan this pattern creates two separate peaks with a quiet gap between them — see our Christmas and New Year in Rajasthan guide. Kashmir does not work that way. Gulmarg has very few good heated rooms, and snow-seekers come for the whole week rather than for a weekend. So the days between Christmas and New Year are not quieter there; in 2025, some of the heaviest traffic of the season came on Monday and Tuesday, 29–30 December. Treat 24 December to 2 January as a single peak block. If you want the quiet version of Kashmir in winter, come before 20 December or after 4 January.
Weather in December
December is one of Kashmir's driest months. The India Meteorological Department's 1991–2020 normals for Srinagar give an average daytime maximum of 9.9 °C, an average night-time minimum of −1.6 °C, about 27 mm of precipitation across the month and fewer than three rainy days. In practice that means bright, sunny days that feel pleasant in the sun and bitter in the shade, morning fog over Dal Lake, and nights below freezing.
The averages hide how much a single December can swing. The last two show both extremes:
- December 2024 was very cold. On the night of 21 December, the first night of Chillai Kalan, Srinagar fell to −8.5 °C, its coldest December night since 1974 and the third coldest since records began in 1891. Pahalgam recorded −8.6 °C and Gulmarg −6.2 °C, and parts of Dal Lake iced over.
- December 2025 was cold and dry. By 8 December Srinagar was below −2 °C at night, but the valley still had no snow. Gulmarg's first major snowfall of the season came only in the last days of the month, just before New Year.
Gulmarg and Pahalgam are colder than Srinagar, and Gulmarg recorded −10.0 °C on the night of 31 December 2024. Pack for well below freezing whichever week you choose.
Where the snow actually is
The honest answer to "will we see snow in Kashmir in December?" is very likely, if you go high enough, and not guaranteed in the places most itineraries put you. Here is where to look, from most to least reliable in December:
| Place | Snow in December | How to plan it |
|---|---|---|
| Apharwat (Gulmarg gondola, Phase 2) | The most reliable. The high slopes hold snow long before the meadow; they had fresh snow as early as 13 October this year | Phase 2 closes in wind, snowfall and poor visibility, so keep two possible gondola days in the plan |
| Gulmarg meadow (about 2,650 m) | Likely by late December; uncertain in the first half | Put Gulmarg in the second half of your trip, not on day 2 |
| Sonamarg (about 2,800 m) | Good chance once winter sets in; it had fresh snow and a full New Year's Eve programme in 2025 | Now reachable in winter through the Z-Morh tunnel (opened January 2025). Your second snow option |
| Pahalgam (about 2,200 m) | Possible, usually later than Gulmarg | Beautiful and very cold; snow is a bonus, not the reason to go |
| Srinagar | Occasional; not something to plan around | Go for the frozen-edged lake, the old city and the light, not for snow |
Until the Z-Morh tunnel opened, a December trip to Kashmir had one snow card: Gulmarg. Now it has two. If Gulmarg is still bare, or the gondola's upper phase is shut for wind on your day, Sonamarg is a day trip from Srinagar on a different road and a different slope. Build both into the plan and your odds of standing in snow improve far more than by changing your dates.
For skiing specifically, December is early. Ski courses and the best skiing usually begin in January, once the base is deep — our Gulmarg winter guide covers the ski season in detail.
A December itinerary that works with or without snow
The order of the trip matters more in December than in any other month. Most packages put Gulmarg on day two or three. In December, that is the day you are least likely to find snow on the meadow and most exposed if the weather closes the gondola. Do Srinagar first and put Gulmarg later, so you can move a day if you need to.
| Trip length | Route | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| 5 nights / 6 days | Srinagar 2 · Sonamarg day trip from Srinagar · Gulmarg 2 · Srinagar 1 | Most couples and families; two snow chances in five nights |
| 6 nights / 7 days | Srinagar 2 · Pahalgam 1 · Gulmarg 2 · Srinagar 1, with a Sonamarg day from Srinagar | First-time visitors who want the full valley and a spare day |
| 4 nights / 5 days | Srinagar 2 · Gulmarg 2 (or Srinagar 3 with a Gulmarg day trip) | Short breaks; keep the last night clear of a morning flight |
How the 5-night plan runs: two nights in Srinagar to settle into the cold — the Mughal gardens, a shikara hour on Dal Lake in the afternoon sun, the old city. Day three is Sonamarg, leaving after breakfast and back before dark. Then two nights in Gulmarg, which gives you two chances at the gondola's upper phase rather than one. The last night is back in Srinagar, so a delayed road or a late snowfall does not cost you your flight. Our Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam itinerary is the full version of this route.

Getting there in December
Most travellers fly to Srinagar. In December the risk is less Srinagar itself than fog at the airport you are flying from. On 19 December 2025, fog across North India cancelled seven flights at Srinagar and delayed twelve more, because aircraft could not leave Delhi, Amritsar and other airports on time. Morning departures from Delhi in the second half of December are the most exposed.
- The rail alternative is now real. Since 30 April 2026, two direct Vande Bharat services have linked Jammu Tawi and Srinagar, each running six days a week and taking about 4 hours 50 minutes. If your Srinagar flight is cancelled, a flight or train to Jammu plus the Vande Bharat is a workable plan B. It also suits families combining Kashmir with Vaishno Devi, since the train stops at Katra.
- Keep the last night in Srinagar and a spare day before any onward connection. Never book a flight home the morning after a Gulmarg or Sonamarg day.
- Drive in daylight, with a local driver who knows the winter roads. Snowfall and peak-week traffic can hold up the Tangmarg–Gulmarg road for hours, and the Mughal Road is shut through winter.
Our how to reach Kashmir guide covers flights and rail from every major city.
Hotels, houseboats and heating
Heating first, view second. In December, a "deluxe" room that is not properly heated is the quickest way to spoil a trip. Ask three questions before you pay: what the room heating is, whether it runs all night, and what happens during a power cut.
- Gulmarg: few good hotels, and they sell out first. When snow arrived just before New Year in 2025, hoteliers reported 100% occupancy, with most rooms booked until the end of January. For 24 December–2 January, fix Gulmarg by the end of October. In the first half of December, two to three weeks ahead is usually enough.
- Houseboats: one night is atmosphere; more is an endurance test in Chillai Kalan. Choose a boat with a bukhari or proper heaters and hot water on demand, and do it early in the trip. After 20 December, a well-heated hotel on the Boulevard is usually the better choice for most guests.
- Pahalgam and Sonamarg: pick hotels on the main road and within walking distance of the centre. Side roads ice over first.
What a private trip costs in December
December has two prices. The first twenty days are among the best-value weeks of the winter. From about 24 December to 2 January, the same hotels charge peak rates, add gala-dinner supplements and insist on minimum stays. For a private trip with your own car and driver, heated hotels and a planner on call, most travellers fall into these bands. They are indicative, and we confirm them against your exact dates:
| Style | 1–20 December (per person, 5 nights, two sharing) | 24 December–2 January | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comfortable private | ₹28,000–₹45,000 | ₹40,000–₹65,000 | Good heated 3–4 star hotels, one houseboat night, private car throughout |
| Premium private | ₹45,000–₹75,000 | ₹65,000–₹1,10,000 | 4–5 star or heritage stays, two Gulmarg nights, better rooms |
| Luxury | ₹75,000 and above | ₹1,10,000 and above | The best properties in Srinagar and Gulmarg, a larger vehicle, private experiences |
Flights are extra and are the most variable cost over Christmas and New Year. Gondola tickets are booked separately on the Jammu & Kashmir Cable Car Corporation's website; the 2026 rates were ₹800 for Phase 1 and ₹1,000 for Phase 2. Our Kashmir tour cost guide explains what moves a quotation, and how to compare tour quotations helps when you have two that look the same.
Christmas and New Year in Kashmir
New Year in the snow is the reason many families choose Kashmir, and it can be wonderful if you plan for the crowds rather than discover them. Last season showed what the week looks like:
- Gulmarg: after the late-December snowfall, around 15,000 people rode the gondola on Monday and Tuesday, 29–30 December 2025, and the Tangmarg–Gulmarg road jammed for hours. Police had to stagger vehicles.
- Sonamarg: held a New Year's Eve festival with music and cultural events. Hotels were near full, and traffic was checked at the tunnel entrance.
- Srinagar: calmer, with the most hotel choice in the valley and the easiest base if the snow roads close.
Three things make the week work. Sleep in Gulmarg rather than commuting to it on 29–31 December, so you are on the first gondola before the day-trippers arrive. Do Sonamarg on a weekday morning, not on New Year's Eve itself. And ask about the gala dinner before you book: at many resort hotels it is often compulsory over New Year and charged per head.
Who should go in December, and who should wait
Go in December: couples and honeymooners (see our Kashmir honeymoon itinerary), senior travellers who like clear skies and quiet roads in the first half of the month, families tied to Christmas school holidays who book early, and anyone who wants Kashmir in winter light without January's depth of cold.
Consider another month: skiers who want a proper base (January–February), families with toddlers in Chillai Kalan unless the hotel is excellent (see our family itinerary for a gentler pace), travellers for whom snow is the only point and whose dates are fixed in the first half of December, and anyone who wants the chinar colour (that was November — see Kashmir in November).
Common December mistakes
- Booking 1–15 December for guaranteed snow on the Gulmarg meadow. In 2025 it did not come until the end of the month. Go high on the gondola, or keep Sonamarg as a second chance.
- Putting Gulmarg on day two. Put it later in the trip and keep two gondola chances.
- Treating 28–30 December as the quiet gap. In Kashmir it is part of the peak.
- Booking Gulmarg for New Year in November. The good heated rooms are gone. Fix them by the end of October.
- Flying home the morning after a snow day. Keep the last night in Srinagar and a spare day.
- Packing woollens instead of winter gear. You need thermals, a waterproof jacket, gloves, a warm cap and boots with grip. Ordinary sweaters are not enough after mid-month.
Safety and practicalities
Kashmir tourism recovered strongly through 2026. Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg are operating normally, with visible security at the resorts. Keep to established routes, follow your driver's advice on timing, and check current advisories a week before you travel; the fuller picture is in our Kashmir in October guide. Indian citizens need no permits for the places in this article. Carry photo ID for the airport, the train and hotels. Mobile coverage is good in the towns and patchy in the side valleys.

Planning Your December Trip
December in Kashmir rewards two decisions made early: which half of the month you travel in, and where in the trip you put Gulmarg. Get those right, keep a spare day and choose heated rooms, and it is one of the most beautiful weeks of the year in the valley.
We plan private, customised Kashmir trips: your own car and driver throughout, hotels chosen for their heating as much as their view, and a plan that changes with the weather rather than ignoring it. If you are tied to Christmas–New Year dates, the time to fix Gulmarg is now.
Tell us your dates, the number of travellers and your preferred hotel category — we will suggest a private itinerary.
