Christmas 2026 falls on Friday 25 December and New Year's Eve on Thursday 31 December. That gives Rajasthan two separate long weekends rather than one continuous peak — and a three-day trough between them that almost nobody books.
If you are flexible by even two days, that gap is the best value in the Rajasthan calendar. Here is how the season actually breaks up, where to be for each half, and what to ask a palace hotel before you pay.
The dates, and why this year splits in two
| Date | Day | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 25 December 2026 | Friday | Christmas Day. Fri–Sun is a natural three-day break |
| 26–27 December | Sat–Sun | Still peak |
| 28–30 December | Mon–Wed | The gap. Working days, between two peaks |
| 31 December 2026 | Thursday | New Year's Eve |
| 1 January 2027 | Friday | New Year's Day — four-day break to Sunday 3rd |
| 14 January 2027 | Thursday | Makar Sankranti — Jaipur's kite festival |
In a year where Christmas lands midweek, the whole fortnight becomes one long peak and prices never come down. 2026–27 is different. Two distinct weekends, with three ordinary working days wedged between them.
Hotels price the two peaks hard, because they fill. The 28th to 30th is a different proposition: the Christmas crowd has gone home and the New Year crowd has not arrived. The weather on those days is identical to the days either side.
The four windows, compared
| 1–22 Dec | 23–27 Dec | 28–30 Dec | 31 Dec–3 Jan | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crowds | Moderate | Heavy | Light | Heaviest of the year |
| Hotel rates | Normal season | Peak | Noticeably lower | Annual high |
| Minimum stays | Rare | Common | Rare | Common, often with a compulsory gala dinner |
| Weather | Effectively identical across all four — clear, mild days, cold nights | |||
| Best for | Value and quiet | Families tied to school holidays | Couples, flexible travellers | Anyone who wants the party |
The gap nobody books
Three days, Monday 28 to Wednesday 30 December. Everything is open, the weather is at its best, and the properties that were full on Saturday have rooms again.
Two ways to use it:
- Sit entirely in the gap. Fly in on the 27th, out on the 31st. You get the season without either peak. This is the cheapest good week of the Rajasthan winter.
- Straddle one peak only. Pick Christmas or New Year, not both, and put the gap on the other side of it. A trip running 28 December to 3 January pays peak for the last three nights and off-peak for the first three.
What does not work is booking 24 December to 2 January and expecting a deal. That is the single most expensive shape a Rajasthan trip can take.

Christmas city, New Year city
The four main cities behave very differently over this fortnight, and the common mistake is treating them as interchangeable.
| City | Character at Christmas / New Year | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Udaipur | The most atmospheric and the most booked. Lake setting, the heaviest concentration of heritage hotels, and the highest New Year premiums in the state | Couples, honeymoons, anyone who wants one beautiful base rather than a circuit |
| Jaipur | Busiest and most social. Big hotel inventory means availability survives later, and the city has the most going on after dark | First-timers, families, anyone wanting the New Year party |
| Jodhpur | Quieter than both. The fort is the draw; the old city is walkable and far less crowded than Udaipur in this window | Photographers, repeat visitors, travellers who dislike crowds |
| Jaisalmer | The coldest nights in the state and the most seasonal. Desert camps run their full programme over the peaks and thin out sharply in between | The desert night, if you can handle genuine cold |
Our usual shape for this fortnight is Jaipur for the busy half and Udaipur for the quiet half — the city with inventory when you need availability, the city with atmosphere when you want to slow down. The route is set out in our Jaipur–Jodhpur–Udaipur itinerary, and the desert leg in the Jaisalmer desert itinerary.
The palace hotel question
Rajasthan's heritage and palace hotels are the reason most people come in this window, and they are also where the money goes. Four things to establish before you pay a deposit:
- Is there a compulsory gala dinner? Most good properties add a mandatory New Year's Eve dinner charge, per person, often for children too. It is frequently not shown in the room rate. Ask for the figure in writing.
- What is the minimum stay? Two to three nights over the peaks is normal. If it forces you into a shape you did not want, that changes which hotel is actually cheapest.
- Is the room you are being sold the one in the photographs? Heritage properties vary enormously between categories within the same hotel. The entry category in a famous palace is often an ordinary modern room in a newer wing.
- How is it heated? Thick stone walls hold cold. A beautiful room with no working heater is the commonest December complaint in Rajasthan, and it is entirely avoidable by asking.
Our pick of the genuine royal residences is in 7 best palace hotels in India, and the wider category question in our luxury hotels guide.
How cold it actually gets
Rajasthan in late December is not warm. Days are clear and comfortable — shirtsleeves in the sun by midday — but the desert loses heat fast after sunset, and nights drop sharply. Jaisalmer and the open desert are the coldest; Udaipur, sheltered and near water, is the mildest of the four.
Two practical consequences. A desert camp night in late December needs proper cold-weather clothing, not a light jacket. And early-morning sightseeing — which is when the forts and the light are at their best — starts cold enough that most people underdress for it on the first day.
Morning fog is the other December factor. It can delay flights and trains across north India from late December into January. If you are connecting through Delhi, leave real slack rather than a tight connection. For how the month compares with the rest of the year, see best time to visit Rajasthan.
Days, routing and driving
| Nights | What fits over this fortnight |
|---|---|
| 4–5 | One city properly, or Jaipur plus a day trip. Sensible if you are tied to the peak dates |
| 6–7 | Two cities — the classic Jaipur and Udaipur pairing, unhurried |
| 9–10 | Three cities with the desert, or three cities at a genuinely slow pace |
| 12+ | The full circuit including Jaisalmer, with room for the fog to cost you a morning |
Rajasthan's distances are long and the roads are better than most people expect but still slower than the map suggests. Jaipur to Udaipur is a full day by road. Over this fortnight the highways are busier than usual, particularly on the 24th, 25th and 31st.
A private car with a driver is the only sensible way to do this in peak season — taxis are scarce and priced opportunistically over the peaks. How that works is set out in our private car and driver guide.
What moves the price
The vehicle and the guiding cost roughly the same whatever dates you pick. Everything else moves:
- How many nights fall on 24–27 December or 31 December–2 January. This is the single biggest lever, by a wide margin.
- Gala dinner charges, which are per person and can add meaningfully to a family's total.
- Hotel category. The gap between a good 4-star and a genuine heritage palace widens sharply in this window.
- Udaipur versus elsewhere. Udaipur carries the steepest New Year premium in the state.
- Party size. The car costs the same for two as for four.
Our Rajasthan trip cost guide breaks the components down. For these specific dates we quote against your actual travel days, because the same hotel can differ by a factor of two between 29 December and 31 December.
When to book
Later than you think for the quiet windows, earlier than you think for the peaks.
- New Year's Eve in a named heritage property: the best rooms in the best-known hotels are usually gone by late October. If this is the trip you want, book now.
- Christmas weekend: four to six weeks is normally workable.
- The 28th to 30th, and the first three weeks of December: three weeks is comfortable. You are not competing with anyone.

Planning Your Christmas or New Year Trip
The decision here is mostly about dates, not destinations. Tied to the school holidays and the peak weekends? Then book early, accept the premium, and choose the city with inventory. Flexible by two or three days? Sit in the gap and spend the difference on a better hotel.
We design private, customised Rajasthan journeys — your own car and driver throughout, hotels chosen individually rather than from a contracted list, and dates arranged around the pricing rather than into it. Outside Himachal, Rajasthan is where our hotel and transport relationships are strongest, which is what makes the difference in a fortnight when everything is tight.
Tell us your dates, the number of travellers and your preferred hotel category — we will suggest a private itinerary.
See the price difference before you decide
Send us the dates you are considering. We will quote two or three shapes side by side — peak, gap, and a mix — so the trade-off is visible rather than theoretical.

Christmas Day 2026 falls on Friday 25 December; New Year's Eve on Thursday 31 December; New Year's Day on Friday 1 January 2027; Makar Sankranti on Thursday 14 January 2027. Dates for Rajasthan's winter fairs — Bikaner Camel Festival, Nagaur Fair and the Jaisalmer Desert Festival — are published by Rajasthan Tourism closer to the season and were not available at the time of writing. Hotel policies on minimum stays and gala dinners vary by property and change year to year; confirm in writing before booking.
