Kashmir in November 2026: Chinar at Its Peak, Saffron Harvest and the Diwali Week — A Planner's Guide

Chinar trees at peak autumn colour in Kashmir, the November view along the Pahalgam road and in Srinagar's gardens
Early November in the valley — the chinars at their deepest red, before the leaves fall around the 20th.

November is the last of Kashmir's autumn and, for many travellers, the best-value month of the year to see it. The chinar trees are at their deepest red in the first half of the month, the saffron fields at Pampore are being harvested, the summer and Diwali crowds thin out after 11 November, and hotel rates ease with them. Days are clear and cold, nights are properly cold, and the first snow of the season usually arrives on the Gulmarg heights before it reaches Srinagar. If you can travel between 1 and 20 November you get the colour; if you travel in the last ten days you get quieter roads, lower prices and a fair chance of seeing fresh snow at Gulmarg without the winter closures.

This guide covers what November is really like week by week, where to go and in what order, how many days you need, how to get there now that there is a rail link, what a private trip costs, and who should pick a different month. Our Kashmir in October guide covers the start of autumn and the safety picture; from December onwards, the Gulmarg winter guide takes over.

Is November a good time to visit Kashmir?

Yes, with one condition: you must be comfortable with cold. Daytime in Srinagar is pleasant in the sun and sharp in the shade; evenings and nights drop close to freezing by the end of the month, and Gulmarg and Pahalgam are colder still. Travellers who choose hotels with proper heating, carry real winter layers and keep drives to daylight hours find November one of the most rewarding months in the valley. Travellers hoping for the green meadows and boat rides of summer will find it bare and quiet by the last week.

WindowWhat you getCrowds and pricesBest for
1–10 NovChinar at peak colour; saffron harvest under way at Pampore; clear daysDiwali week (Diwali is Sunday 8 Nov): busy, peak rates on the popular hotelsFamilies using the Diwali break; photographers
11–20 NovColour still strong early, fading by the 20th; saffron harvest finishing; cold nightsCrowds drop sharply after Bhai Dooj; rates softenCouples, senior travellers, anyone who can avoid the festival week
21–30 NovBare trees, crisp light, first snowfalls likely on the Gulmarg heights, sometimes lowerQuiet; among the lowest rates of the year before the Christmas bumpValue seekers, travellers who want early snow without Chillai Kalan cold

One date to note: the 21–24 November long weekend (Guru Nanak Jayanti on Tuesday 24 November, one day of leave on the Monday) brings a short second wave of visitors from Punjab and Delhi. It is nothing like Diwali week, but book Gulmarg for those nights early.

Kashmir weather in November: what to expect

We describe weather in patterns rather than numbers because November swings: a week of blue skies can end with a snowfall. Build one flexible day into any itinerary longer than four nights.

What is special about November

The chinar

Kashmir's chinar trees turn from late October and hold their deepest colour in the first half of November, then drop their leaves quickly. The classic places to see them are Naseem Bagh on the university campus by Dal Lake, the Mughal gardens (Nishat and Shalimar), the Chinar Bagh stretch of the Jhelum, and the road into Pahalgam. Ask your driver for an early-morning start at Naseem Bagh: the light is best before nine and the leaf carpet is undisturbed.

The saffron harvest

The saffron fields around Pampore, twenty minutes from Srinagar on the Pahalgam road, flower and are hand-picked from late October into November. It is one of the few genuinely seasonal sights in India that most itineraries miss, and it costs nothing but a stop en route to Pahalgam. Buy saffron from a grower or a reputable shop in Pampore rather than at the airport.

Early snow at Gulmarg

By the last third of November the upper slopes at Gulmarg are usually white, and a proper snowfall in the meadow is a realistic hope rather than a promise. This is the honest answer to "will we see snow in Kashmir in November": likely on the heights from mid-month, possible in Gulmarg town late in the month, unlikely in Srinagar.

Where to go in November, and in what order

The right order matters more in November than in summer, because you want the colour early in the trip and the cold places when you are acclimatised to it.

  1. Srinagar first (2 nights): Naseem Bagh and the Mughal gardens for chinar, a shikara hour on Dal Lake in the late-afternoon light, the old city and Jama Masjid, Pari Mahal for the view. One night on a houseboat is worthwhile in the first half of the month; by late November the cold makes a well-heated hotel the better second night.
  2. Pahalgam (1–2 nights): stop at Pampore for saffron on the way. Betaab and Aru valleys, a walk along the Lidder, a slow afternoon. Two nights if you want a day without the car.
  3. Gulmarg (1 night, or a day trip from Srinagar): the gondola to Kongdoori and, if it is running and the weather is clear, to Apharwat. Staying the night gives you the meadow at dawn; a day trip is enough for most families and avoids the coldest night of the trip.
  4. Srinagar again (last night): near the airport side of town if you have a morning flight; a last evening on the Boulevard otherwise.

How many days do you need for Kashmir in November?

Trip lengthRouteWho it suits
4 nights / 5 daysSrinagar 2 · Pahalgam 1 · Srinagar 1 with a Gulmarg day tripDiwali-week families with fixed dates; first visits
5 nights / 6 daysSrinagar 2 · Pahalgam 2 · Gulmarg 1Couples and photographers; the best balance of colour and rest
6–7 nightsAs above plus a spare day for weather or a Sonamarg excursionSenior travellers who prefer a gentle pace; late-November trips where snow may change plans

Fewer than four nights is not worth the flight in November — the days are short and the drives eat the daylight. Our Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam itinerary is the base most November trips start from; the Kashmir honeymoon itinerary reorders it for couples.

Planning November around specific dates?

A week either side of the 15th changes the colour, the crowds and the price. Tell us your dates, the number of travellers and your preferred hotel category — we will tell you what that week is likely to give you before you book anything.

How to reach Kashmir in November

Inside the valley, a private car with a local driver is not a luxury in November; it is what makes early starts, saffron stops and weather changes manageable. Shared taxis and self-drive are poor choices in the cold months.

Choosing hotels for November

What a private Kashmir trip costs in November

November has two prices. Diwali week (roughly 4–11 November) is peak, close to October rates; from mid-November the same hotels drop noticeably, and by the last week Kashmir is at some of its lowest rates before Christmas. For a private trip with your own car and driver, handpicked heated hotels and a planner on call, most travellers fall in these bands — indicative, and confirmed against your exact dates when you enquire:

StyleDiwali week (per person, 5 nights, two sharing)After 15 NovemberWhat it usually means
Comfortable private₹35,000–₹55,000₹28,000–₹45,000Good 3–4 star hotels with heating, one houseboat night, private car throughout
Premium private₹55,000–₹90,000₹45,000–₹75,0004–5 star or heritage stays, better rooms, Gulmarg night included
Luxury₹90,000 and above₹75,000 and aboveThe best properties in Srinagar and Gulmarg, larger vehicle, experiences arranged privately

Flights are extra and are the most variable cost in Diwali week. Our Kashmir tour cost page explains what moves the price; for choosing between two operators' quotes, see how to compare tour quotations.

Send us your dates and hotel category and we will itemise a private trip — car and driver, heated hotels, a Gulmarg plan that suits the weather — so you can compare it properly.

Who should visit in November, and who should wait

Common November mistakes

  1. Arriving in the last week expecting colour. By 25 November most chinars are bare. Come before the 20th for the leaves, after it for the snow and the prices.
  2. Booking a houseboat for every night. One night is atmosphere; three cold nights is an endurance test.
  3. Treating Gulmarg's gondola as guaranteed. The upper phase depends on weather. Plan Gulmarg as a meadow-and-mountain day, and treat Apharwat as a bonus.
  4. Packing for a hill station, not for winter. Thermals, a proper jacket, gloves and shoes with grip. Woollens alone are not enough after mid-month.
  5. Flying in the same morning as an onward connection out. Late-November fog delays are common. Give yourself a buffer or take the train.

Safety and practicalities in November 2026

Tourism in Kashmir recovered strongly through 2026 and the main circuits — Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg — are operating normally, with visible security at the resorts. Keep to the established routes, follow your driver's advice on timing, and check current advisories a week before travel. The fuller picture is in the safety section of our Kashmir in October guide. Indian citizens need no permits for the places in this article; carry photo ID for the airport and hotels. Mobile coverage is good in the towns and patchy in the side valleys.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is November a good time to visit Kashmir?
Yes, if you are prepared for cold. The first half of November has the chinar at peak colour and the saffron harvest; the second half is quieter, cheaper and brings the first snow to Gulmarg's heights.
Does it snow in Kashmir in November?
Usually on the upper slopes at Gulmarg from mid-month, sometimes in Gulmarg town in the last ten days, and rarely in Srinagar. Treat snow as a likely bonus late in the month, not a certainty.
When is the chinar colour at its best?
The first half of November. Leaves fall quickly after about the 20th.
Is the Gulmarg gondola open in November?
Generally yes, subject to weather and maintenance. The lower phase to Kongdoori is the reliable one; the upper phase to Apharwat can close on snowy or windy days. Check on the day.
How many days are enough for Kashmir in November?
Four nights is the minimum that justifies the journey; five nights (Srinagar 2, Pahalgam 2, Gulmarg 1) is the best balance.
Is a houseboat stay worth it in November?
For one night in the first half of the month, on a boat with proper heating, yes. Later in the month a heated hotel is the more comfortable choice.
Is Kashmir crowded during Diwali?
Diwali week (4–11 November 2026) is busy and priced as peak. From 12 November the valley quietens quickly and rates fall.
Can I combine Kashmir with Ladakh in November?
Not sensibly. The Srinagar–Leh highway over Zojila closes with heavy snow — in some years late November, in others not until December or January — and even when open it is a hard, cold drive. Ladakh in winter is a separate, fly-in trip for experienced cold-weather travellers.
Is November cheaper than October in Kashmir?
After Diwali, yes — from about 12 November hotel rates fall below October levels, and the last ten days of the month are among the cheapest of the year before Christmas. Diwali week itself is priced like peak October.

Planning a Kashmir Trip in November?

November is a month where the details decide the trip: which hotels are actually warm, which days to give Gulmarg, whether to fly or take the train, how to time Pampore and Naseem Bagh. We plan private Kashmir trips with a local driver, handpicked heated hotels and a planner who stays with you through the trip, and we adjust the route when the weather changes rather than leaving you to sort it out. See the routes on our Kashmir tour packages page, or send us your dates.

Tell us your dates, the number of travellers and your preferred hotel category — we will suggest a private November itinerary. And if the answer is that a different month suits you better, we will say so. WhatsApp +91 76499 29992 or use the Plan My Trip button above.

About the dates and figures in this guide

Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, Bhai Dooj on 10–11 November and Guru Nanak Jayanti on Tuesday 24 November. Chinar colour, the saffron harvest and the first snowfall follow the weather, not the calendar, so the windows given here are the usual pattern rather than a guarantee. Gondola operations, rail timetables and road status change through the month and should be confirmed the week you travel. Price bands are indicative for private trips and are confirmed against your exact dates and hotels when you enquire.
