Two hill stations, one river, no eight-hour days

Nainital is a green lake in a bowl of hills with a promenade along one shore; Mussoorie is a long ridge above the Doon with the plain on one side and the Himalaya on the other. They are the two hill stations people know, and they are nowhere near each other.

So the itinerary is built around the gap. Two nights on the lake, a night beside the Ganga at Rishikesh with the evening aarti, two nights on the ridge, and the new expressway home. Private car, private guide, and drives that end by early afternoon.

The longest drive of the trip is the first one, and there is an honest alternative: the Shatabdi from Delhi to Kathgodam, about five and a half hours with breakfast on board, and your car waiting for the last hour up the hill. By road you leave early, cross the plain, and climb from the heat into a cool bowl of hills with a green lake at the bottom. Nothing is scheduled on arrival except a walk along the Mall and, if you like, a boat.

Good to know: Take the train up if you can. Kathgodam has no Vande Bharat — ignore anything online that says otherwise — but the daily Shatabdi is a good service, and it turns seven or eight hours in a car into five and a half on a train plus one up the hill.

🚆 The train option

The Shatabdi from Delhi to Kathgodam runs daily and takes about five and a half hours. Pantnagar airport, below Nainital, flies only to Delhi and the new Noida airport at Jewar.

🌡️ Weather note

The India Meteorological Department publishes no normals for Nainital; the nearest station with 1991–2020 normals is Mukteshwar on the same ridge system: April 22°C by day and 10°C at night, June 24°C and 14°C, October 20°C and 9°C, January 12°C and under 2°C.

💡 Good to know

Mall Road has been a no-horn zone since 1 August 2026, heavy vehicles are barred from it at set hours in May, June and October, and cars pay a municipal toll to enter the town. Your driver handles it all.

The ridge above the town in the morning — Snow View and Tiffin Top, from which the snow line runs along the northern horizon on a clear day — and the Naina Devi temple at the head of the lake. In the afternoon, the lakes of the valley below: Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal, a loop of an hour or two that most visitors to Nainital never take and most of ours say was the best part.

This is the day other itineraries hide. Nainital to Mussoorie in one go is well over three hundred kilometres of plain and hill, and doing it straight means arriving in the dark, exhausted, on your first evening in a new town. So we stop. Rishikesh sits almost exactly between them, on the Ganga, and it gives you the evening aarti at Triveni Ghat, a walk across the suspension bridge, and a night to the sound of the river instead of a road.

Good to know: Leave Nainital by seven. The drive is long but flat for most of its length, and the reward for an early start is a whole afternoon and evening on the river rather than an hour of it. Ask your driver for the front seat if you are prone to motion sickness on the descent.

Laxman Jhula has been closed to the public since 2019. You cross on the other bridges and the view is the same.

A morning on the river — a rafting run if the season is open, the Beatles Ashram if it is not, or simply breakfast and the ghat — then the short drive across the Doon valley and up the hill to Mussoorie. Under three hours, and you are on the ridge by early afternoon with the plain on one side and, on a clear day, the Himalaya on the other.

The Mall has vehicle restrictions in peak season and the town is walked. Ropeways here — Gun Hill, and the new Dehradun–Mussoorie line still under construction — are checked for your dates, not promised.

Mussoorie — Mussoorie

Landour is the older, higher cantonment above Mussoorie: deodar forest, stone churches, a loop road with the Himalaya on one side and the Doon on the other, and a small crossroads of shops and cafés that has changed very little in a century. You walk it early with your guide, when the peaks are out if they are going to be. The afternoon is yours — Kempty Falls, Cloud’s End, or the hotel.

The last leg is the easy one. Down the hill to Dehradun and onto the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway, roughly 210 km and fully open since April 2026, with the long elevated stretch through Rajaji National Park where the forest passes beneath the road. Around four hours door to door on a normal day. Or, if you would rather not drive at all, Dehradun’s airport is at the bottom of the hill and flies nonstop to a dozen cities.

Good to know: There is no fuel, food or water on the expressway itself; we stop before joining it. If your onward flight is from Delhi in the evening, the expressway makes it feasible from a Mussoorie breakfast, but tell us the time and we will build the morning around it.

Government messaging says two and a half hours Delhi–Dehradun; recorded drives range from a little over two on an empty road to more than four in traffic. Plan on three and a half to four door to door, plus the hour down from Mussoorie.

Dehradun (Jolly Grant) has nonstop flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Kolkata and more.

🏔️ Extend it

Nainital & Mussoorie FAQs

Roughly 300 km by road, across the plain and up again, which is seven to eight hours of driving. That is why this itinerary breaks the transfer with a night at Rishikesh on the Ganga rather than pretending it is one comfortable day.

Because it sits almost exactly between the two hill stations, on the river, and it gives you the evening aarti at Triveni Ghat, the suspension bridge, and a night to the sound of water. It turns the worst day of a typical Nainital–Mussoorie itinerary into one of the best days of this one.

Mostly. The Kathgodam Shatabdi replaces the first drive — about five and a half hours from Delhi plus one up the hill — and a flight from Dehradun replaces the last. The Nainital–Rishikesh day is road only, but it is the only long one.

They are different. Nainital is a lake town in a bowl of hills, best for boats, the lakes loop and family afternoons. Mussoorie is a ridge above the plain, best for Landour walks, views over the Doon and, on clear mornings, the Himalaya. Most travellers are glad to have done both.

On clear mornings from the ridge above Nainital and from Lal Tibba in Landour, usually in October–November and March–April. In summer the haze builds early and in the monsoon there is no view. Go up first thing and treat it as a bonus.

Yes. Since 1 August 2025 every visitor must register online in advance on the Uttarakhand tourist-care portal, with the vehicle number, and a QR code is checked at entry points and hotels. It is free. We do it for you.
