The Quiet Kumaon Ridge

Space. It is for travellers who have done the hill-station circuit, or never wanted to, and would rather spend five nights on one ridge with the Himalaya along the horizon than tick off towns. Very little is scheduled and none of the drives is over three hours.

On clear mornings, yes — from the road above Ranikhet, from Kasar Devi and above all from Binsar’s Zero Point, where the view runs from Nanda Devi to the peaks in Nepal. October–November and March–April are the reliable months and the first hours after sunrise the reliable time. In summer the haze builds early and in the monsoon there is no view at all.

The daily Shatabdi from Delhi to Kathgodam takes about five and a half hours and your car meets the train for the hour up to Nainital. There is no Vande Bharat on this line. Private car all the way from Delhi is roughly 300 km and seven to eight hours, and is available if you prefer it.

Hotels chosen for their terraces and their trees: one night by the lake at Nainital, two in the forest around Ranikhet’s cantonment, and two either at a quiet property above Almora or at a lodge inside Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, which has no grid electricity and the best view in Kumaon. We tell you the trade-offs and let you choose.

Enough, and none of it compulsory. Ranikhet has forest walks, the Chaubatia gardens and the Jhula Devi temple; Almora has its old bazaar lanes and Bright End Corner; Kasar Devi and Jageshwar are half-days; Binsar is a sunrise walk. Your guide suggests rather than schedules.

Safer than Garhwal. The published landslide studies and the road-closure reports concentrate on Garhwal — Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Pithoragarh — and Kumaon’s Nainital–Ranikhet–Almora belt appears far less often. That said, July and August are the wettest months at every weather station in the state and the views are gone. We would rather you came in October or March.

The India Meteorological Department publishes no normals for Ranikhet, Almora or Binsar; the nearest station, Mukteshwar, averages 12°C by day and under 2°C at night in January, and 20°C and 9°C in October. Nights on the ridge are cold from November to March even when the days are warm. Pack a proper jacket.

Yes, and it is often chosen by them. The drives are short, the walks are gentle and optional, and the days are unhurried. The one thing to know is that everything in Kumaon is on a slope.

Easily. Corbett is on the way down from the ridge. Two nights at the park edge with three safaris makes an eight-day Kumaon that covers forest, lake and ridge together.

A group of small, very old stone temples in a valley of deodar trees beside a stream, a little over an hour from Almora. It is a living place of worship as well as a protected monument, and one of the quietest half-days in the itinerary.

March and April, when whole hillsides in Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary turn red. If you have a choice of month, that is one of the two we would suggest; late October to November is the other.
