The best add-on to a Golden Triangle trip depends on what you want from the extra nights. For wildlife, add two nights at Ranthambore. It sits on the railway between Agra and Jaipur, so it adds a tiger safari with no backtracking. For India's spiritual heart, add two nights in Varanasi, a short flight from Delhi. For romance and palaces, add two or three nights in Udaipur, then fly back to Delhi. For mountains, add four or five nights in the Himalayas. Most first-time visitors from the UK, the US and Australia add one of these and keep the whole trip to 9–12 nights.
This guide compares the four extensions honestly: what each one is like, how it joins Delhi, Agra and Jaipur without wasted days, what it adds to the cost, and who it suits. It is written by a private tour operator based in India. For the Golden Triangle itself, see our Golden Triangle tour guide.
- Ranthambore: +2 nights (3–4 safaris); trains from Agra (about 3 hours) and on to Jaipur; safari booking opens 90 days ahead
- Varanasi: +2 nights; about 1½ hours by air from Delhi; evening Ganga Aarti and a dawn boat on the Ganges
- Udaipur: +2–3 nights; about 6–7 hours by road from Jaipur, or a short flight; fly from Udaipur back to Delhi
- The Himalayas: +4–5 nights; Shimla by the UNESCO toy train, or Amritsar and McLeod Ganj
- Best season for all four: October to March; Christmas and New Year is the busiest and dearest week
- Typical private trip: about US$250–600 per person per day with hotels, car and driver, guides and taxes
Which Golden Triangle add-on is best? The four compared
| Ranthambore | Varanasi | Udaipur | The Himalayas | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The experience | Tiger safaris in open jeeps, a 10th-century hill fort | Ghats, rituals and the Ganges; Sarnath | Lakes, palaces, a slower romantic pace | Mountain air, the toy train or Tibetan culture |
| Extra nights | 2 | 2 | 2–3 | 4–5 |
| How it joins the loop | Train between Agra and Jaipur | Flight from Delhi, at the start or end | Onward from Jaipur, fly home via Delhi | Train from Delhi, fly or drive back |
| Backtracking | None | One flight each way | One flight back | A separate leg from Delhi |
| Winter | Cold early safaris; open jeeps | Foggy mornings in Dec–Jan | Mild and sunny | Cold; snow possible in January |
| Best for | Families, photographers, wildlife lovers | Culture, religion, photography | Couples, honeymoons, older travellers | Railway lovers, walkers, quiet seekers |
If you cannot decide, two questions settle it. Do you want one more “wow” that is completely different from forts and monuments? Choose Ranthambore or Varanasi. Do you want the trip to slow down at the end? Choose Udaipur or the Himalayas.
Ranthambore: is a tiger safari worth adding to the Golden Triangle?
For most families and first-time visitors, yes. Ranthambore is one of the best places in India to see a wild Bengal tiger, and it fits the Golden Triangle better than any other add-on because it lies between Agra and Jaipur. You take the train from Agra to Sawai Madhopur (the fastest takes about 3 hours), spend two nights and three or four safaris in the park, then continue to Jaipur by train or road. No day is lost going back the way you came.
How Ranthambore safaris work
- Vehicles: safaris run in morning and afternoon shifts, in 6-seat open jeeps (Gypsy) or 20-seat open buses (Canter). A jeep is quieter and better for photography.
- Booking: through the Rajasthan Forest Department. Seats open up to 90 days ahead, and a passport is needed for each foreign visitor. Popular zones sell out early for the winter holidays, so book the safaris as soon as your dates are fixed.
- Zones: you are allotted a zone, not a route of your choice. Sightings are never guaranteed, which is why we plan three or four safaris, not one.
- Cost: the park entry alone for non-Indian citizens in the core tiger area is ₹1,575 per person per safari under the fee order in force from 1 April 2026, before the vehicle and guide charges.
- Closures: the core zones close for the monsoon. In 2023 Rajasthan also announced a weekly Wednesday closure for its tiger reserves, so check the rule for your dates before fixing the route.
Winter tip: morning safaris from November to February start in the cold, in an open vehicle. Bring a warm jacket, a hat and gloves for the first two hours; by midday it is pleasant. April to June gives the best sightings, but the heat is hard on most visitors. For a full guide to zones and seasons, see our Ranthambore safari guide.
Varanasi: is it worth adding to the Golden Triangle?
Yes, if you want the India you cannot see anywhere else. Varanasi is one of the oldest living cities in the world, on the banks of the Ganges, and it is intense in a way Delhi, Agra and Jaipur are not. The two moments that make the trip are the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat and a quiet boat ride along the ghats at dawn. Add a half-day at Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon.
- Getting there: fly from Delhi (about 1½ hours) at the start or the end of the trip. Varanasi does not join the Delhi–Agra–Jaipur loop by road in a sensible day.
- Nights: two is right for most travellers: arrive for the evening aarti, take the dawn boat, see Sarnath, fly out.
- Winter: December and January mornings can be foggy, which sometimes delays flights. Keep a little slack before an international departure.
- Who it may not suit: crowds, cremation ghats and narrow lanes are part of the experience. Travellers who find this hard should choose Udaipur instead.
Varanasi's biggest night of the year this season is Dev Deepawali on 24 November 2026, when the ghats are lit with lamps. Hotels fill early for it. For the city itself, see our Varanasi travel guide.

Udaipur: the slow, romantic finish
Udaipur is the add-on for couples, honeymooners and anyone who wants the last days of the trip to feel like a holiday rather than a tour. Lake Pichola, the City Palace and the lake palaces make it the most romantic city in Rajasthan, and the pace is gentler than in Jaipur.
- Getting there: about 6–7 hours by road from Jaipur, or break the drive with a night in Pushkar or Chittorgarh. A short flight also works.
- Getting home: fly from Udaipur to Delhi (about 1¼ hours) for your international flight, so there is no long drive back.
- Nights: two or three; three if you want a boat ride, a cooking class and a free afternoon.
- Winter: the mildest of the four: sunny days and cool evenings from November to February.
Udaipur also opens up a longer Rajasthan circuit through Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. See our Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur itinerary if you have more than 12 nights.
The Himalayas: Shimla or McLeod Ganj
If you want mountains, add four or five nights in Himachal Pradesh. The two easiest options are Shimla, reached on the UNESCO-listed Kalka–Shimla toy train, or two nights in Amritsar for the Golden Temple followed by three in McLeod Ganj, home of the Dalai Lama's temple. It is the longest add-on, but the contrast with the plains is the greatest. We cover both routes in detail in adding the Himalayas to a Golden Triangle trip.
Three Golden Triangle routes with an add-on
| Route | Nights | Night by night |
|---|---|---|
| Golden Triangle + Ranthambore | 8 | Delhi 2 · Agra 2 · Ranthambore 2 · Jaipur 2 · fly home from Delhi |
| Varanasi + Golden Triangle | 9 | Delhi 2 · fly to Varanasi 2 · fly to Delhi, drive to Agra 2 · Jaipur 2 · Delhi 1 |
| Golden Triangle + Ranthambore + Udaipur | 11 | Delhi 2 · Agra 2 · Ranthambore 2 · Jaipur 2 · Udaipur 3 · fly to Delhi for home |
On every route, the first night after a long-haul flight is a rest night, and the last night is close to the airport if your flight home leaves early. Delhi to Agra is about 3½–4 hours by road on the expressway, or under two hours on the fastest trains; Jaipur to Delhi is about 5 hours by road.
Can you add two extensions to the Golden Triangle?
Yes, with 11 nights or more. The pair that works best is Ranthambore and Udaipur: both are in Rajasthan, they join the route in a line, and you fly home from Udaipur via Delhi. Ranthambore and Varanasi also works well, because the wildlife and the river city are so different. Varanasi and the Himalayas together add two separate legs from Delhi; that suits a trip of two weeks or more, not a first trip of ten days.
What does an add-on add to the cost?
For our private trips with international guests, the whole journey typically runs at about US$250–600 per person per day, including hotels, your own car and driver, guides and taxes. The add-ons move the price in different ways:
- Ranthambore: safari fees and the jeep are the extra; the lodge you choose decides most of the rest.
- Varanasi: two domestic flights, a boat and a local guide; hotels on or near the ghats are limited, so book early.
- Udaipur: one domestic flight home; a lake-view or palace hotel is where the money goes.
- The Himalayas: trains, a car in the hills and a heated hotel; the most nights, but not the dearest per night.

Mistakes to avoid
- One safari only. Tigers are never guaranteed. Plan three or four safaris over two nights.
- Leaving safari booking late. Seats open 90 days ahead and the best zones go first, especially over Christmas and New Year.
- Driving to Varanasi. It is a long day on the road from Agra. Fly from Delhi.
- A tight connection after Varanasi. Winter fog can delay morning flights; do not fly in from Varanasi on the day of a long-haul departure.
- Driving back from Udaipur to Delhi. Fly; it saves a full day.
- Adding everything. Three add-ons on a two-week trip means a new hotel almost every night. Pick one, or two at most.
