Yes, you can add the Himalayas to a Golden Triangle trip in winter, and for most travellers from the UK, the US, Australia and Europe the best way is one of two short add-ons. The first is three nights in Shimla, reached on the UNESCO-listed Kalka–Shimla toy train. The second is two nights in Amritsar and three in McLeod Ganj, home of the Dalai Lama's temple. Both work best with trains and short flights rather than long drives. Allow four to five extra nights; treat snow as a bonus, most likely in January.
This guide, written by a private tour operator based in Shimla, compares the two add-ons, gives a day-by-day route that joins them to Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, explains what the hills are really like from December to February, and lists the mistakes that cost visitors a day. For the Golden Triangle itself, see our Golden Triangle tour guide.
- Extra nights needed: 4–5 (Shimla 3 + travel, or Amritsar 2 + McLeod Ganj 3)
- Best winter weeks: late November to mid-December, and February; January for the best chance of snow
- Toy train: Kalka–Shimla Railway, about 96 km, about 5–6 hours, climbing from 656 m to about 2,075 m
- Getting there: train from Delhi to Kalka, then the toy train; or train to Amritsar, then about 5–6 hours by road to McLeod Ganj
- Getting back: by road to Chandigarh and a short flight, or a domestic flight from Dharamshala
- Who it suits: couples, families and older travellers who want mountains, heritage and quiet after the busy plains
Shimla or McLeod Ganj: which Himalayan add-on?
For a first trip, choose one. Both are reachable from Delhi in a day without a long, tiring road journey, which is why we recommend them over Manali for overseas visitors with limited time.
| Shimla and the toy train | Amritsar and McLeod Ganj | |
|---|---|---|
| The experience | A colonial hill capital, a heritage railway, pine and deodar forest, Himalayan views | The Golden Temple, Tibetan Buddhist culture, the Dalai Lama's temple, the snow-capped Dhauladhar range |
| Extra nights | 3–4 | 5 (2 Amritsar + 3 McLeod Ganj) |
| Getting there | Train Delhi–Kalka, then the toy train | Train Delhi–Amritsar, then about 5–6 hours by road |
| Getting back | Road to Chandigarh (about 3½ hours) and a short flight to Delhi | Domestic flight from Dharamshala, or road and train |
| Winter | Cold; snow most likely in January; Christmas and New Year festivities on the Ridge | Milder at McLeod Ganj; snow on the mountains above rather than in town |
| Best for | Railway lovers, couples, families, first-time visitors | Travellers interested in religion, culture and walking |
Option 1: Shimla and the toy train
Is the Kalka–Shimla toy train worth it in winter?
Yes. On a clear winter morning it is one of the great railway journeys in Asia. The Kalka–Shimla Railway is part of the Mountain Railways of India UNESCO World Heritage Site. Completed in 1903, the narrow-gauge line runs about 96 km from Kalka (656 m) to Shimla (about 2,075 m) through more than a hundred tunnels and hundreds of bridges, including the multi-arched stone galleries it is famous for.
- The journey takes about 5–6 hours. Several trains run each way daily, including the Himalayan Queen, the Shivalik Deluxe Express, the small heritage Rail Motor and the glass-roofed Vistadome coach.
- Getting to Kalka: the morning Shatabdi from New Delhi reaches Kalka in about four hours and is timed to connect with the toy train. Check current timings when booking; seats sell out in the holiday weeks.
- Seats are small and the ride is slow. For older travellers or anyone who dislikes long sits, ride the toy train for part of the way and meet your car at a station such as Barog.
What to do in Shimla in winter
- The Ridge and the Mall: the heart of the old British summer capital, closed to traffic, with the 19th-century Christ Church at one end.
- Christmas and New Year: the Shimla Winter Carnival runs on the Ridge and Mall Road from 24 December to 1 January.
- Ice skating: Shimla's open-air ice rink normally runs from about December to February, depending on the cold.
- Snow: Kufri and, higher up, Narkanda are the nearest places to find snow when the town has none. See our Shimla and Kufri itinerary.
- Heritage: the Viceregal Lodge (now the Indian Institute of Advanced Study) and the colonial streets below the Ridge.
Option 2: Amritsar and McLeod Ganj
This route adds two very different places that most Golden Triangle tours miss.
- Amritsar (2 nights): the Golden Temple, Sikhism's holiest shrine, is best seen twice, at dawn and again lit up at night. The community kitchen serves free meals to thousands of visitors every day. Amritsar is about 5–6 hours from Delhi by train.
- McLeod Ganj (3 nights): the home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government in exile, above the town of Dharamshala. Visit the Tsuglagkhang temple complex, walk to Bhagsu, and enjoy the views of the Dhauladhar range, often snow-capped in winter. Allow about 5–6 hours by road from Amritsar.
- Getting back: domestic flights connect Dharamshala's Gaggal airport with Delhi. Hill airports depend on the weather, so keep a spare day before an international connection.
Our Dharamshala, Dalhousie and Amritsar itinerary shows a longer version of this route.

A 14-night route with the Himalayas
The Golden Triangle plus Shimla fits comfortably into 14 nights. Doing the hills at the end gives you the quiet part of the trip last, after the busy cities.
| Nights | Where | How you get there |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Delhi | Arrive; a rest day after the long-haul flight |
| 2 | Agra | Train or about 3½–4 hours by road |
| 3 | Jaipur | About 4½–5 hours by road |
| 1 | Delhi | About 5 hours by road, or a short flight |
| 3 | Shimla | Morning train to Kalka, then the toy train |
| 1 | Chandigarh | About 3½ hours by road; a modern city with good hotels |
| 2 | Delhi | Short flight, then a spare day before your flight home |
For the Amritsar and McLeod Ganj version, replace the Shimla nights with Amritsar 2 and McLeod Ganj 3, and fly from Dharamshala to Delhi at the end. With Rajasthan added (Udaipur, Jodhpur), plan 18–21 nights; our Rajasthan planning guide for UK and European travellers and our guide for travellers from the USA, Canada, Europe and Japan cover that part.
What winter is really like in the hills
- Cold, clear and bright. Winter days in Shimla are usually sunny and crisp; nights are near or below freezing in January. McLeod Ganj is milder. Pack layers, a warm jacket, gloves and a hat.
- Snow is not guaranteed. In recent winters Shimla town has seen snow most often in January, and some years only lightly. Snow on the higher ridges around Kufri and Narkanda is more likely. If seeing snow matters, travel in January and keep a flexible day.
- Snow can close roads. A heavy fall can shut roads for a day. That is why we keep the last night before a flight in Chandigarh or Delhi, never in the hills.
- Christmas to New Year is the busiest week, with Indian holidaymakers filling Shimla. For quieter hills, come in early December, in mid-January or in February.
- Delhi's air is often poor in November and parts of winter. The hills are a clean-air escape, which is one more reason to end the trip there.
Our guide to Himachal Pradesh in December has snow odds by town, and the Himachal winter snow guide covers every snow area.
Hotels, heating and comfort
Shimla's hotels range from colonial-era heritage properties to modern hotels with mountain views. In winter, choose by heating before the view: ask whether rooms are centrally heated or have heaters that run all night, and whether hot water is on demand. Heritage buildings can involve steps and slopes, so ask about lifts if anyone has limited mobility; our guide to India at an easy pace for travellers over 60 covers this in detail. In McLeod Ganj, hotels are smaller; a room with a Dhauladhar view and a heater is the one to ask for.
Visa, flights, safety and cost
- Visa: UK, US, Australian and most European passport holders can apply online for India's e-Tourist Visa on the official site, indianvisaonline.gov.in, between 120 and 4 days before arrival. See our India tourist visa guide.
- International flights: almost every trip starts in Delhi; the hill airports have small domestic services only, and depend on the weather.
- Safety: Shimla and McLeod Ganj are long-established destinations for international visitors. The main winter risks are icy roads and closures, which a local driver and a spare day manage. Read your own government's travel advice before booking.
- Cost: a private add-on mainly depends on hotel level, the dates (Christmas–New Year is the most expensive) and whether you fly or drive back. International guests are quoted in US dollars, itemised; see how a private tour with a car and driver works.
Mistakes to avoid
- Trying to add Manali on a short trip. It is 12–14 hours by road from Delhi. Shimla or McLeod Ganj gives you the mountains in a fraction of the time.
- Booking the last night in the hills before a flight home. One snowfall can close the road. End in Chandigarh or Delhi.
- Riding the whole toy train when anyone dislikes long sits. Do part of it and meet your car on the way.
- Choosing a hotel by its view in January. Ask about heating first.
- Expecting guaranteed snow in December. January is the better month for snow; December is better for clear views and festivities.
- Visiting Shimla over New Year without booking early. It is India's busiest hill-station week; fix hotels and train seats by the end of October.
