Yes, you can add the Himalayas to a Golden Triangle trip in winter, and for most travellers from the UK, the US, Australia and Europe the best way is one of two short add-ons. The first is three nights in Shimla, reached on the UNESCO-listed Kalka–Shimla toy train. The second is two nights in Amritsar and three in McLeod Ganj, home of the Dalai Lama's temple. Both work best with trains and short flights rather than long drives. Allow four to five extra nights; treat snow as a bonus, most likely in January.

This guide, written by a private tour operator based in Shimla, compares the two add-ons, gives a day-by-day route that joins them to Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, explains what the hills are really like from December to February, and lists the mistakes that cost visitors a day. For the Golden Triangle itself, see our Golden Triangle tour guide.

Key facts at a glance
  • Extra nights needed: 4–5 (Shimla 3 + travel, or Amritsar 2 + McLeod Ganj 3)
  • Best winter weeks: late November to mid-December, and February; January for the best chance of snow
  • Toy train: Kalka–Shimla Railway, about 96 km, about 5–6 hours, climbing from 656 m to about 2,075 m
  • Getting there: train from Delhi to Kalka, then the toy train; or train to Amritsar, then about 5–6 hours by road to McLeod Ganj
  • Getting back: by road to Chandigarh and a short flight, or a domestic flight from Dharamshala
  • Who it suits: couples, families and older travellers who want mountains, heritage and quiet after the busy plains

Shimla or McLeod Ganj: which Himalayan add-on?

For a first trip, choose one. Both are reachable from Delhi in a day without a long, tiring road journey, which is why we recommend them over Manali for overseas visitors with limited time.

Option 1: Shimla and the toy train

Is the Kalka–Shimla toy train worth it in winter?

Yes. On a clear winter morning it is one of the great railway journeys in Asia. The Kalka–Shimla Railway is part of the Mountain Railways of India UNESCO World Heritage Site. Completed in 1903, the narrow-gauge line runs about 96 km from Kalka (656 m) to Shimla (about 2,075 m) through more than a hundred tunnels and hundreds of bridges, including the multi-arched stone galleries it is famous for.

Option 2: Amritsar and McLeod Ganj

This route adds two very different places that most Golden Triangle tours miss.

Our Dharamshala, Dalhousie and Amritsar itinerary shows a longer version of this route.

A 14-night route with the Himalayas

The Golden Triangle plus Shimla fits comfortably into 14 nights. Doing the hills at the end gives you the quiet part of the trip last, after the busy cities.

NightsWhereHow you get there
2DelhiArrive; a rest day after the long-haul flight
2AgraTrain or about 3½–4 hours by road
3JaipurAbout 4½–5 hours by road
1DelhiAbout 5 hours by road, or a short flight
3ShimlaMorning train to Kalka, then the toy train
1ChandigarhAbout 3½ hours by road; a modern city with good hotels
2DelhiShort flight, then a spare day before your flight home

For the Amritsar and McLeod Ganj version, replace the Shimla nights with Amritsar 2 and McLeod Ganj 3, and fly from Dharamshala to Delhi at the end. With Rajasthan added (Udaipur, Jodhpur), plan 18–21 nights; our Rajasthan planning guide for UK and European travellers and our guide for travellers from the USA, Canada, Europe and Japan cover that part.

Our guide to Himachal Pradesh in December has snow odds by town, and the Himachal winter snow guide covers every snow area.

Hotels, heating and comfort

Shimla's hotels range from colonial-era heritage properties to modern hotels with mountain views. In winter, choose by heating before the view: ask whether rooms are centrally heated or have heaters that run all night, and whether hot water is on demand. Heritage buildings can involve steps and slopes, so ask about lifts if anyone has limited mobility; our guide to India at an easy pace for travellers over 60 covers this in detail. In McLeod Ganj, hotels are smaller; a room with a Dhauladhar view and a heater is the one to ask for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add the Himalayas to a Golden Triangle tour?
Yes. The two easiest add-ons from Delhi are three nights in Shimla, reached on the Kalka–Shimla toy train, or two nights in Amritsar and three in McLeod Ganj. Each adds four to five nights and uses trains and short flights rather than long drives.
Is the Shimla toy train worth it in winter?
Yes. The Kalka–Shimla Railway is part of the UNESCO-listed Mountain Railways of India, and clear winter mornings give the best views. The journey takes about 5–6 hours; you can ride part of the way and continue by car.
How long is the Kalka–Shimla toy train journey?
About 96 km and about 5–6 hours, climbing from 656 m at Kalka to about 2,075 m at Shimla through more than a hundred tunnels. The morning Shatabdi from New Delhi to Kalka is timed to connect with it.
Will I see snow in Shimla in winter?
Possibly, but it is not guaranteed. In recent winters Shimla town has seen snow most often in January. Kufri and Narkanda, higher up, have better odds. Travel in January and keep a flexible day if snow matters.
Shimla or McLeod Ganj: which is better for foreign visitors?
Choose Shimla for the toy train, colonial heritage and winter festivities; choose Amritsar and McLeod Ganj for the Golden Temple, Tibetan culture and the Dalai Lama's temple. Both suit a first trip; Shimla needs one or two fewer nights.
How do I get from Delhi to Shimla?
Take the morning train from New Delhi to Kalka, then the toy train to Shimla; or drive about 7–8 hours with a private car. The return is easiest by road to Chandigarh (about 3½ hours) and a short flight to Delhi.
Can I visit the Dalai Lama's temple in McLeod Ganj?
Yes. The Tsuglagkhang temple complex in McLeod Ganj is open to visitors. Public teachings by the Dalai Lama happen on some dates only; check the official schedule before you travel.
How cold is Himachal in winter?
Days in Shimla are usually sunny and crisp; nights are near or below freezing in January. McLeod Ganj is milder. A warm jacket, gloves and a hat are enough for town, with a heated hotel room.
How many days do I need to add the Himalayas?
Four to five extra nights: three in Shimla plus travel, or two in Amritsar and three in McLeod Ganj. A Golden Triangle trip with the Himalayas fits comfortably into 14 nights.
