Dev Deepawali 2026 in Varanasi (24 November): Boat, Ghat or Hotel Terrace, and How to Plan the Long Weekend

Dev Deepawali 2026 falls on Tuesday 24 November, the full moon of Kartik. The lamps are lit at dusk, and the auspicious evening window runs from 5:08 pm to 7:47 pm. This year the festival is the last night of a long weekend — Saturday 21 to Tuesday 24 November, with Guru Nanak Jayanti a gazetted holiday on the 24th — so Varanasi will be at its fullest. Arrive by the 23rd, stay three nights, leave on the 25th, and book your room and your boat now: in 2025 about 80 per cent of the city’s rooms were booked a month ahead, and the best ghat-facing rooms went for up to ₹1.5 lakh for the night.

When is Dev Deepawali 2026, and what happens through the day?

Dev Deepawali is celebrated on Kartik Purnima, fifteen days after Diwali (Diwali 2026 is on Sunday 8 November). Tradition holds that the gods themselves come down to bathe in the Ganga on this full moon, and Varanasi lights the ghats for them, from Ravidas Ghat in the south to Rajghat in the north. The day has a clear shape, and knowing it is most of the planning.

The five-day Ganga Mahotsav, a cultural festival of music and dance on the ghats, traditionally ends on Dev Deepawali, so the evenings before the 24th are lively too. Check its 2026 programme closer to the date.

Boat, ghat or hotel terrace: which is the best way to see it?

This is the decision that shapes the whole trip, and it depends on who is travelling more than on budget.

Prices are as reported by Amar Ujala on 4 November 2025 for Dev Deepawali 2025. Expect 2026 to be similar or higher.

Our view: for most private travellers the boat is the right answer. You see far more than from any single ghat, you are seated, and your group stays together. The catch is the boarding point. With the roads closed from mid-afternoon, the boat must board at a ghat you can walk to from where you are staying, or at one your driver can reach before the closures. That one detail is where most self-planned trips go wrong.

Two things have changed that older guides do not mention. In 2025 the stretch from Assi to Namo Ghat was barricaded in the river, only registered motorboats, barges and cruises were allowed inside, and hand-rowed boats were barred. So a “rowing boat for Dev Deepawali” offer may simply not be able to take you where the lamps are. And the main ghats — Dashashwamedh, Assi, Namo and Panchganga — were kept free of boats during the aarti, so boats watch from the river, not from right against the steps.

How many nights, and which days?

Three nights is right for most people: arrive on Monday 23 November at the latest, leave on Wednesday 25th. Arriving on the day itself is the most common mistake — flights and trains run late into a city that is closing its roads, and you lose the afternoon you need to get into position.

The long weekend adds a twist. It runs from Saturday 21 to Tuesday 24 November, but the festival is its last night, and nobody gets out of Varanasi comfortably on the night of the 24th. So if you are using the long weekend, plan on two days of leave — Monday 23rd and Wednesday 25th — not one. A four-night stay, arriving on the 21st or 22nd, lets you do the ordinary Varanasi things (the dawn boat ride, Kashi Vishwanath, Sarnath) before the crowds peak.

Two clashes to know about on the same full moon. Guru Nanak Jayanti falls on the 24th, which adds to travel demand across north India. And the Pushkar Camel Fair in Rajasthan ends on the same day. Where should you stay for Dev Deepawali?

Location matters more than hotel category this week, because of the road closures.

• Riverside, in the old city (Assi to Dashashwamedh to the northern ghats). You are inside the closure zone, so you can walk to your boat or terrace and walk back. The heritage properties here have the terraces and the views. The trade-offs: narrow lanes, steps and very high festival-night rates.
• Close to the ghats but on a road (Godowlia, Sonarpura, Bhelupur side). Walkable to the ghats and easier for your car on the other days. You will still walk the last stretch on the evening of the 24th.
• Cantonment and the newer part of the city. The most comfortable 4- and 5-star hotels, and the only realistic choice if you want larger rooms and easy car access. But on the 24th you must go in before the roads close and come back late, slowly. With a driver who knows the drop and pick-up points, and a boat boarding nearby, it works well.

The prices tell you how scarce the riverside rooms are. In 2025 Amar Ujala reported ghat-facing premium rooms at up to ₹1.5 lakh for the night, rooms in the Pandeypur area at ₹35,000–55,000, and about 80 per cent of the city booked a month before. Book by the end of October if the view from your room matters to you.

For senior travellers, we generally suggest a riverside hotel with a lift and a terrace, or a comfortable hotel away from the river plus a private boat that boards at the ghat nearest your drop-off point. See also our notes on planning India tours for senior citizens.

How do you get to Varanasi and around the city on the day?

• By air: Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (VNS) is about 25 km from the city, with direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and other major cities. Fares for the long weekend rise as it fills; book once your dates are fixed.
• By train from Delhi: the Vande Bharat Express (22436) leaves New Delhi at 6:00 am and reaches Varanasi at about 2:00 pm, eight hours, and does not run on Thursdays. Reserve as soon as the booking window opens, because Guru Nanak Jayanti falls on the same day.
• On the 24th: after about 3 pm you will walk. In 2025 around 30 parking areas were set up across the city, VIP vehicles were parked at Maidagin, and golf carts ran to the temple and ghats. A private car is still worth having — it gets you to the right drop point early and meets you at a pre-agreed spot afterwards — but the last kilometre or two is on foot.

What does a private Dev Deepawali trip cost in 2026?

The festival night drives the bill. On a normal night a good Varanasi hotel costs a fraction of what the same room costs on the 24th, so the festival night is often half the total, or more. A three-night private plan for Dev Deepawali

Day 1 — Monday 23 November: arrive. Reach Varanasi by midday. In the late afternoon, a first walk along the ghats near your hotel; in the evening, watch the regular Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh from a boat, a calm preview of the next night. If you arrived early enough, do your Kashi Vishwanath darshan today rather than tomorrow.

Day 2 — Tuesday 24 November: Dev Deepawali. Before dawn, watch the Kartik Purnima snan from a boat or a terrace. Late morning, an easy half-day at Sarnath, about 10 km from the ghats, back at the hotel by early afternoon. By 3–3:30 pm, be at your boat’s ghat or your terrace. Lamps at dusk, the aarti, the lights and fireworks through the evening; back to the hotel on foot or with your driver at the agreed point.

Day 3 — Wednesday 25 November: a slow morning. Sleep in; the lamps are gone but the ghats are calm and the light is soft. Leave in the afternoon, or add a day or two.

Who should skip Dev Deepawali, or do it differently?

• Travellers who find long walks, steps or crowds difficult. More than 10 lakh visitors were expected in 2024. You can still go, but only with a terrace room or a boat that boards close to where you are dropped — never on the ghat steps.
• Families with toddlers. The same applies: a terrace or a private boat, not the ghats.
• Anyone sensitive to smoke or poor air. Lakhs of oil lamps, fireworks and the November haze of the plains make the evening air heavy. Carry any medication you rely on and check the day’s air quality.
• Travellers who want Varanasi at its best rather than its busiest. Come in the last week of November or in December instead. The weather is just as good, the ghats are calm, and rooms cost a normal-night rate. Our guide to the best time to visit Varanasi goes month by month.

Mistakes to avoid

• Arriving on the 24th. Arrive the day before at the latest.
• Booking a hotel without asking how you get back after the road closures. Ask where the car can drop you and where the boat boards.
• Buying a boat seat from someone on the ghat on the day. Book a registered boat in advance, confirm the boarding ghat and insist on life jackets.
• Planning Kashi Vishwanath darshan for the festival day. Go on the 23rd, early.
• Bringing a drone. The city was a no-fly zone around the festival in 2024.
• Booking the return the same night. Leave on the 25th.
